Mura Posted August 9, 2016 #76 Share Posted August 9, 2016 I'm a minor foodie! But I have to say, if the conversation around the table centers on wine in the way that this thread has, I'd be put to sleep. No offense, but the grading of wine is a bit tedious for the non-aficionado. To each his own. We are foodies, like our wine but are not aficionados. The conversation at our three La Reserve dinners have NOT dealt with the wines other than to say, "Oh, this is nice" or ... "No thanks, I've had enough." It could be the luck of the draw and maybe we've never been seated with wine "experts". Mind you, to those of you who ARE experts, we'd be happy to learn what you think! But our experience with conversation at these dinners has been that it has just been lovely conversation ... including invitations to join our partners when we visit their home town. Rare pinotlover Posted August 10, 2016 #78 Share Posted August 10, 2016 I actually agree with Mura. This entire exchange started because Dan decided to trash the food and wines and declared the wines Mediocre, drinkable with flaws, when the wines clearly are far higher ranked wines by the real wine experts. Everyone will enjoy the food, the wine, and the conversation. An enjoyable evening all the way around. ;)
Mura Posted August 10, 2016 #79 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Exactly! Actually, I have a neighbor -- we share cat visiting duties with each other -- who works for Wine Spectator in NYC. One benefit I have is that when I babysit her cats, I always get nice red as a thank you. After our first La Reserve visit I mentioned to her that friends who had been somewhat disappointed in the wines and she said she'd follow up ... she may or may not have, but I never heard a response. I didn't push it with her, that isn't her job. If they really gave us super-super wines the price for the dinner might well be much more than most people want to pay. That's just a guess. We have enjoyed our three dinners and the wines served ... And especially the company of our fellow passengers. By the way, we've had three dinners with three different butlers, and NONE of them escorted us to the venue. So people, if your butler didn't personally escort you, I wouldn't feel slighted! We certainly didn't. Mura
