drmomsc Posted February 19, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2017 We are taking a cruise out of Naples. When we return, we have a villa booked near Volterra for 5 nights. We fly home from Florence. We are a party of 11-ages 9 to 78. How difficult is it to rent a car in Naples (or 3 cars)? We will need to return the car in Florence. Or, should we take a train to Florence and rent cars there? We even thought about hiring a tour company to take us to the villa, but we would still need a car for some of the stay. Any suggestions?
jimicaj Posted February 19, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 19, 2017 We rented a car in Sorrento and returned it in Florence. We found it just as easy as renting a car in the States. My husband did apply and receive an international drivers license from AAA a few months before our trip. Returning the car in Florence was a little hairy just because of how busy the rental depot is there, but nothing we couldn't deal with. Be careful driving in Florence, the streets are very restricted and if you enter a restricted area you will receive an electronic fee, which can be pricey. We had no problems but were very careful about our route. Have a great time! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
jimicaj Posted February 20, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2017 You will not need a car in Florence and cannot drive in the city center at all. A cab can take you to your hotel and to the airport. Otherwise public transportation is very easy and inexpensive to use in most major Italian cities. euro cruiser Posted February 20, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 20, 2017 They are not going to Florence, according to the post. As long as you will need a car (or cars) anyway, you might as well rent from Naples and save yourself multiple methods of travel. The airport is probably the easiest location to rent from, it's right on the autostrada you'll take to Tuscany. You can take taxis from the cruise port to the airport or, for just €4 each, take the Alibus from right in front of the port to the airport. Taxis to the airport are a fixed fare of €19. You would probably need four of them, which comes to about €7 per person (for comparison vs. the bus).
