ZimmCouple Posted March 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 2, 2017 We will be in Cozumel May 5 for Cinco de Mayo. Just wondering if anyone has past experience with this and what if anything shouldn't be missed to celebrate the day while in Cozumel? We aren't planning to do any tours while in Cozumel and were even thinking of not getting off the ship until I realized what day we'll be in port. Rare crewsweeper Posted March 3, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2017 Cinco de Mayo, while important in Mexican history, it's a minor celebration in Mexico. The day is now primarily a US holiday celebrating Mexican-American culture. The real Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. You might see a military parade or tow, but typically these occur in the evening so unless your ship departs late, you'll not be able to attend. There may be some more traditional ceremonies at El Cedral. But they won't involve margaritas and avocados. And just for the record, the margarita wasn't invented until the late 1930s and introduced in the US in the late 1940s.
mrsfuzzmo Posted March 3, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2017 We travel to Mexico almost every year the first week of May. We have not once seen anything celebrating Cinco de Mayo....other than the fun we brought on ourselves! Nothing to see, really.
