If you board early enough, the MDR should be open for lunch. In my experience, they try to direct everyone to the buffet, which is a zoo and a half. We always skip that madhouse and head to the MDR or O'Sheehans, which are relatively empty, and enjoy a quiet sitdown meal.
I agree, this is what I do, although not all cruise lines have the MDR open on embarkation day, that is where a specialty restaurant may be an option.

Anyone have tips for the day of embarkition? We're sailing July 22 on NCL Escape.

I like to drop m bags, grab a drink and explore the ship.

Up to the top, then wander down, fore to aft down a deck aft to fore, grab a refill as I go.

Gives me some idea of where his are.

As you've mentioned upthread

However, the OP asked specifically about NCL and my answer was specifically about NCL :)

When on a new ship (new to us!), I like to start exploring from the top down. Reason: those people boarding after us are filling the elevators both with people and their carry-ons, so taking a flight of stairs down each time is easier.

I do like to try to unpack, if possible, before muster. But as others have said, keep it light--your vacation starts when you walk up the gangway. And for us, the muster is not horribly boring--it SCREAMS "cruise time!"

Yes, Mustard drill is very bland and eats into exploration time. I find going from the top down useful as well.
