Balcony cabin

Hi guys, inquiring minds would like to know. Will be on the Radiance Ots in two weeks to Alaska, will be on the port side, balcony cabin, mid ship. Got to thinkin today, an was wonderin, when you cruise an have an inside or outside cabin, do you ever wonder what it would be like to have a balcony cabin when the ship is in port, an you are on the dock, do you look at the ship & think of all those standin on their balconies, an think, thats gonna be me sometime, an also watch whats gonna on the dock? Also, what would there be to see if your cabin is facing the bay?

We were on starboard side when in Sitka and Ketchikan. The view was spectacular. There were islands jutting out of the water and lots of float planes flying around. Loved the scenery.

Booked an inside for the first time ever for us for Alaska figuring to save money and that we would want to be up on top deck most of the time (weather permitting) to see both ways. Last time it was rainy and cold so we did not use the balcony much in Alaska like we would out of FL or in So. Caribbean. But when HAL switched our ship to the larger Oosterdam and balcony prices were less than half the former difference we switched to a balcony. We'll save the inside for some other time.

 

But as for facing dock or channel there are pluses for both. When we face the water we like watching the floatplanes and especially in Ketchikan where there are lots of eagles swooping down to snag stunned fish - then fight in the air over the catch. We do however go out on a deck facing the dock at departure time to watch for runners. Can't miss the show ya know. ;)

Hi Sequim, hadn't thought of that bein in Ketchikan to watch the eagles, an who about Skagway, Juneau? An yes I've seen the show for the runners. Once in Mazatlan, was watchin those on deck, pointin to Princess leavin without em, always have to laugh whenever those folks names are mentioned that aren't back on board.

Haven't been to Skagway (yet) but Juneau has a lot of planes though from watching the Juneau Harbor Cam I can't recall seeing very many eagles like in Ketchikan.

There aren’t as many Eagles in Skagway as there are in Ketchikan, there are a pretty good number in Juneau in the tourist/harbor area. Watch the tree line for what look like cotton balls in the trees, those are Bald Eagles. A good place to go have lunch drink a cold Alaskan Amber beer is the Hanger on the wharf. Check it out http://www.hangaronthewharf.com/ the float plane dock is just outside, great views of them taking off and landing. Going back to the post. Port side is the best I think, you can see what’s going on in the harbor, see the float planes and etc. I love the sounds that the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and the DHC-3 Otter float planes make when they take off from the harbor, you get a great view from your port side balcony. The new cruise ship pier should be completed by the time the cruise ships come in so you should be closer to the action on the water.
