Alaska Cruise pick between Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm

Here, for example, is the Johns Hopkins Glacier in Glacier Bay. Unfortunately you can get no closer because the area serves as a protected habitat for harbor seals.

This opens in Sept. I've sailed here twice, right up to the glacier face. :)

Why? We are first timers travelling to Alaska in July '06 and have the same choice to make.....

I am interested in your comparison.

Are you looking at Hubbard and Glacier Bay?? Both certainly are very worthwhile, but for me Glacier Bay and the full day of sailing into the fjord and past several glaciers is just a highlight. The Park Service narration is top notch and the bonus of humpbacks just make the preference for me.

As noted, I have sailed all glaciers sailed by the cruise ships- none a disappointment. Go with what fits your overall itinerary the best. AND return to Alaska to see other areas.

...we sailed past Johns Hopkins (actually sat at the location for 5-10 minutes) the first week of August. My first guess is that it's off limits during the mating/nesting time of year...

It is a harbor seal sanctuary.
