Carnival Hub is a free app that will cost you $5.00 per cruise to use for text messages onboard to others with the same app. Install it before you sail.

 

It does not work onshore.

 

Onshore you can use any standard texting app but it will likely incur a per message charge.

 

If you have ATT or Verizon postpaid service you can take advantage of their $10/day program to use cell service in a foreign port. This service is not available on a ship.

While apps like Whatsapp and FB Messenger are free, you still have to be connected to the internet to use them. You would still have to pay for Carnival's wifi and then connect to wifi on shore.
