It does NOT have to be in a carry on...You can just carry the 12 pack onto the ship.

True- it just can't be in your checked luggage. They can (and will!) confiscate it from the checked luggage if found.

I've been putting colas in checked luggage for years. Never a problem. If for some reason they are confiscated, I'm out less than $10 for drinks I purchased on sale. I like to bring my own light weight blanket because I hate comforters. I wrap the colas in the blanket to make sure they don't get busted and ruin mine or anyone else's luggage.
