Regatta - Amazon River Levels

Can anyone onboard this cruise comment on the water levels in the Amazon when you traversed the river? Was navigation a problem? Were the shore excursions affected?

Just off the 25 day Amazon today. Terrific cruise.

 

The Amazon basin had much lower levels of rain fall this summer than normal. This caused the Amazon to be slightly lower than normal but with a depth of 200 ft there was no problem with navigation. The levels are up three feet from their low in the summer and expected to rise another 40ft by the end of the rainy season in June. Many of the docks, such as those in Manaus, float. When the water reaches its peak the land is flooded by 6 feet of water for 35 miles on each side of the river making it them about 75 miles wide. This land is flooded for six months of the year.

Thanks for your feedback. We are leaving Feb 18 from Miami to Manaus (Feb 28 - Mar 2) and onward to Rio and Buenos Aires. Will report back on our return at the end of March.

Glad to hear "low water level" not a problem.

 

We did the Amazon way back 12-91, on original Pacific Princess, and it was truly an amazing river and trip.

We just returned from this trip and found the water levels to be extremely low. At almost every port we had to climb to the town level at approx 45* angle. Several of the pax that were handicapped found this to be a problem. We loved this trip and agree that although it was a once in a lifetime experience we wouldn't repeat it. Once is enough and the memories are amazing. I haven't heard anyone mention the pink river dolphins in the Amzon. They were an astounding sight and one of the highlights of the trip.

Just got back from the Amazon on the, Regatta, The water levels were low but are now getting rain.This has caused no problem to shipping. The only stop that had a problem was "Parintins" which had a very steep bank to get up to the main road. This was

 

extremely hard for anyone having a breathing problem or with leg problems. The trip was great and you will enjoy the country.
