MSC for Me App for a non-t3kn0geek

OK, so I've got the MSC for Me app loaded on my iPhone and am logged in and everything seems in order...they've got correct cabin, profile, etc. My question/s: do I need to purchase an internet package to use it on the ship?; if not, does opening the app while on the ship rack up charges, such as roaming, texts, etc.? Thanks.
