Stay in Marseille or go to Aix?

Trying to decide if we should stay in Marseille and walk around or go to Aix. Not into museums or churches but like to look at architecture, shops and eat local food.

 

Thanks for any information on either place.

Aix is certainly the more charming and pictoresque city.

Yet if you have never been to Marseille you probably find more than enough in terms of shopping and local food right there without going on the long trip up to Aix.

 

Regarding architecture Marseille is much more varied than Aix.

Aix is beautiful, almost completely 17th and some 18th century buildings in the historic part.

Marseille has something form "every" period up to today with some very ambitous contemporary architecture next to the old harbour built in 2013 when Marseille was European Cultural Capital.

Your pictures are lovely. We are booked on a Royal excursion that is a panoramic tour of Marseilles and Aix.

We hope to get to Aix with some time to wander the street markets.
