where to stay, not on island

We are flying in on Friday morning, for a Saturday cruise out of Galveston.   I don't really want to stay that night on the island, because the prices for one night hotel are outrageous.   I don't want to stay as far away as the airport (IAH).  Some place in between with something to do, not NASA related, but maybe someplace to walk around and eat dinner.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Check out hotels in the Kemah area.  They have a boardwalk area that would provide some sightseeing and restaurant options.

Unless you stay by airport and eat in hotel , your double transfer costs and hotel costs are still going to most likely be more than going on to Galveston Friday . Galveston is a destination tourist island with easy walking and cheap trolley transportation to get around . Do your homework and then make choices within your budget and expectations .
