Key West is a LONG way from the rest of Florida. 3 hour drive to Miami. The theme parks (Orlando) are probably a 6-7 hour drive.

If you're on a cruise you'll be very close to the center of town (Duval Street).

For a short visit on a cruise, the Conch Train or Trolley are a nice way to see the town and learn about it. Then you could shop/dine/drink on Duval street. If you're there later, the Sunset Festival at Mallory Square is great.

If you do a search, you will find a number of websites with a wealth of information about Key West. Also, there are a number of good guide books out there. Key West has a very interesting history and is a wonderful place to visit. I agree, the trolley is a nice way to get an overview, with a lot of information about the island in the narration. Hope this helps.
