jmw81 Posted March 11, 2020 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2020 We're going on a cruise from Southampton to Iceland in July. We've already taken out travel insurance but we're wondering if we should add 'Ash cloud cover'. A volcano erupted in Iceland a few years ago and the resulting ash cloud affected flights, but our holiday won't involve a flight. I don't know how cruises are affected so is 'Ash cloud cover' advisable?
klfrodo Posted March 11, 2020 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2020 (edited) Since you use the term "holiday" (a UK/EU term) vs. "vacation" (a North American term), I'll assume your a friend from across the pond. In my opinion it's all about the numbers and your risk tolerance. I live in the Seattle, WA (Northwest portion of US. Across the border from Vancouver, British Columbia) area. I'm surrounded by volcanos. I fly to Alaska for work. Even more volcanos. Yes, they burp ash into the air occasionally but I've never been affected whether personally or professionally. Since there are no flights involved, insuring against an ash cloud would be a waste of money,,, if I were the person taking this cruise with the same circumstances. Your risk tolerance may be much less than mine. Edited March 11, 2020 by klfrodo
