Dining Room Attire

What is the dress for the non-formal dinners in the dining room on Mariner of the Seas?

Based on what we have witnessed on recent cruises, it seems to be a "JDAN" (Just Don't Arrive Naked) free for all relative to attire (or lack thereof)

As orville99 said, "JDAN".  However, this is the official policy, which may or may not be enforced:

Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues

  • Bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.

Show us where it says no shorts in MDR.

  • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch. [i.e., not dinner]
  • Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.
  • Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.

Yup, don’t pay attention to it.  Hubby wears nice shorts & a button down or polo shirt every night because that’s what he wants to wear.  But it is stated in the MDR verbiage.

🤣 I see you added the "i.e. not dinner".  Too funny.

That same Royal webpage says:

"Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues

Bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner."

If shorts weren't allowed at dinner, they'd simply add "and shorts" after "tank tops".

Just accept it...there is no dress code banning shorts in the MDR.

There was a saying we heard back in law school:  If you don't have the facts, pound the law.  If you don't have the law, pound the facts.  If you don't have either, pound the table.

The "no shorts" crowd on CC sure does do a lot of table-pounding.

This is the actual dress code without anything added other I red highlighted a couple of words:

Q

What is the dress code onboard all ships?

A

When you’re onboard, the right look will vary by venue. But here are a few types of suggested attire you’ll see, grouped by item.

  • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.

Formal nights

Think of our formal dress code as a night out in your best black-tie look — suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns are all acceptable options. There can be 1 to 4 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion. Our Chef’s Table dining experience also enforces a formal dress code policy.

  • 3/4/5 night cruises - 1 formal night*
  • 6 and 7 night cruises - 2 formal nights*
  • 8 to 10 night cruises - 2 formal nights*
  • 11 to 14 night cruises - 3 formal nights*
  • 15 + night cruises - 3 or 4 formal nights*

*The number of formal nights is at the ship's discretion and can vary by itinerary.Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues

Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues

  • Bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.

Casino Dress Code

  • Shirt and shoes are always required. Cover-ups should be worn over bathing attire.

NOTE:  The dress code is a suggestion.  The "Dress Code" for the Main Dining Room/Specialty Dining Venues doesn't prohibit shorts.  AND, as I've seen many people, including members of my party, go to the MDR on formal nights wearing shorts, I've never observed anyone asked to leave.  If you go by the "Suggested Formal Dress Code", nobody would be allowed to wear jeans either or anything else not mentioned.   I've never got "formal" for the MDR on formal nights.  I've never had a problem.  I usually wear a pair of jeans (no holes) and a Polo shirt.

Did you see my post?  Took that from the Royal app under Main Dining Room.  Again, I don’t care but it does say shorts.

I'm going by the Official Policy of Royal Caribbean.  Yes, I saw your post from your mobile app.  I can say for sure, but, I don't believe it's been updated, we all know how great Royal's IT is at updating, if at all.  I bet you will find people with shorts on in the dining room that your post is referring to and not being asked to leave.  If I wear shorts, which I don't, to the MDR and some yahoo wanted to make an issue with it, I'd have that policy, the official one, bookmarked on my phone.

Yes, my husband will be one of them.  A poster asked to show where Royal says no shorts in the dining room.  I provided that.

As I stated before, RC does say no shorts for dinner, but people don't follow and RC doesn't throw people out.  I think as long as you have clothes and footwear on, you'll be fine.

I don't understand why people feel they need to attack.

Yes I did ask.  And no where does it say shorts not permitted.
you can add any verbiage you’d like.   It still doesn’t say it on the official site.

It’s all a suggestion.   I’ve never worn pants in the MDR.

It doesn’t not say it.   No where does it say no shorts.
they will ask you to leave if you have a bathing suit on though.

I’ve a tally worn my nice swim trunks for dinner a few times here and there.

I took my screenshot from the Royal app under Main Dining Room so Royal DOES say it somewhere.  I didn’t add the verbiage, Royal did.  You asked where it says no shorts, it says it on the app.  You are posting the FAQS section.  Which is the official policy?  I don’t know.  All I am saying is no shorts is mentioned by Royal.

DH and teenage sons wore khaki type slacks and polo or button down long sleeve shirt (they found dining room might be cool as well as the theater) and decent sneakers.  I wore capris, slacks or skirt/dress as I would to dinner out at home.

This is exactly what we wear.

Not sure who is attacking who here.  I think it's been a very civil discussion, so far.

Back to the discussion though.

1.  The FAQ is the official policy!  It says, "What is the dress code on all ships", and then answered it, Royal Caribbean answers it!  That's official.  It's Royal Caribbean answering the question on their website that they maintain and provide.

2.  If only the items listed in the "Formal" part of the dress code are authorized in any of the dining venues, why aren't we discussing jeans, polo shirts, capris, t-shirts, and so on?  I would think those would be unauthorized as well, don't you?

3.  If there is a blurb in the mobile app somewhere saying (I don't have the mobile app on my phone until it's time to check in and I delete it as soon as I get off of a cruise) that shorts are not allowed (that's not to doubt that there is or isn't), how official is it if it is not enforced and I've never seen it enforced and I've observed many people wearing shorts, including in my own party, in the specialty and main dining venues?

@poocher, I fully understand what you are saying, for sure.  I just like to go by what is a company-wide policy, what I've observed, and what far too many people share about their experiences.  It would be nice if RCCL sync their information to be consistently believable/factual.
