HAL Cruise Cancellation Protection Plan

Recommended Posts

Hello - recently I booked a new cruise with HAL, and chose to include their Platinum protection plan in the booking.  A few days later, I changed my booking to move from an Oceanview to a Balcony cabin, and decided I no longer wanted the protection plan (thought I might get my own insurance outside HAL).  When I asked to drop that coverage, I was told that it was non-cancellable after 24 hours.  I didn't pay for the plan when I first booked, just the cruise deposit .  I'm a little confused here - why would something I haven't paid for be non-cancellable?  And are they saying if I cancelled the entire cruise I'd somehow still have to pay for the insurance?  Very strange to us, but looking for opinions from HAL gurus out there.

You did pay for it, and HAL passed the fee on to a third-party insurer. When you upgraded your cabin, the amount due to keep the protection also increased. At this point you should pay the increase and keep the CPPP! At least you have something to show for it (CFAR protection and some medical on the cruise).

You shouldn't have bought the CPPP until just before penalties began, which is immediately for non-refundable-deposit cruises, Final Payment for most refundable deposit cruises, and about a month before FP for some longer cruises.

I’m still somewhat confused by this. On my confirmation it says this about CPP…

CPP Platinum becomes effective when the plan cost amount is received by Holland America line (in addition to
any required cruise deposit amounts and/or payments).

All I’ve paid so far is a $600 deposit. So to me this means the policy is not yet effective so should be able to be cancelled.

You can remove the cruise protection, but someone will need to manually adjust off the penalty when you do it. You'll have to call during regular business hours when a resolutions specialist can waive the penalties.
