Tendering in Mykonos on Celebrity

We are arriving in Mykonos at 7am on a Celebrity cruise. Can we safely make a 9am excursion not booked through Celebrity? I understand Celebrity excursions get priority on tenders.

That's a tough one.

It depends whether on their itinerary Celebrity's "7am" is when they arrive or when they're cleared for disembarkation - different cruise lines, even different ships, tend to choose the one or the other. The difference in ports like Mykonos isn't long, usually about 30 minutes. But 7am is early, that suggests it's ship's arrival time, so probably best to add 30 minutes.

It also depends whether your ship moors off-shore & passengers are tendered, or your ship berths at the cruise quay (about 2 miles from town) and passengers travel to town by large water-bus or bus or taxi.

Regardless of what your itinerary says, the decision about who tenders & who berths is frequently switched according to which ships are involved and the weather & sea-state.

Yes, if it's a tender port those on early ships' excursions - and sometimes those in high-grade cabins - have priority disembarkation. However, unless things have changed, tenders aren't ship' tenders, they're high-capacity local boats and extremely efficient.

But if the ship berths there's no priority - the water-bus & local buses & taxis are operated privately. Waterbus is fun, but taxi is quicker & not overly-expensive and might better suit your timing.

So if your ship berths at the quay you'll probably find that you get to town more quickly.

Do you know the meeting point? The harbour ? Or one of two bus stations ?

All are a reasonably short walk from the landing point for ship's tenders & the water-bus, but there's sometime confusion about the location of the bus pick-up point.

Sorry, I'm going to duck out of advising whether the timing is safe.

Others may know better than I.

And you can ask the excursion operator, but if it's a booking agency (Viator, Cruise Excursions, etc) you're unlikely to get a reliable answer.

There's little need for "excursions"  on Mykonos - where are you planning to visit?

Hi,

Just noticed that was your first post - so a belated welcome to Cruise Critic.

Also noticed that you've asked in the general forum - you'll get a better response in the forum which deals specifically with Greek ports

So I suggest that you repeat your question there.

No problem, @RJjjj and welcome to the Cruise Critic website & message boards! Your new thread has been moved to the Ports of Call - Europe - Mediterranean - Eastern & Western - Greece Ports forum where your inquiry will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have been there frequent the forum and provide feedback there. Browse through the thread titles in the forum looking for threads of interest. You may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you found us! Please click here Cruise Critic Community for all our discussion forum categories. I suggest you put the page link in your browser's Favorites for quick & easy access in the future. Please read a few threads in the various forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on any of our various discussion forums, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Use the dark blue Start new topic button and word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will post replies to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry message to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention the cruise line, ship, sail date or port in your inquiry message if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you.

Now that you have booked your cruise, be sure to see if there is an existing Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your specific cruise line, ship and sail date. Please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll CallFor more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships.

Use the Roll Call Finder Tool on the Celebrity Roll Calls forum for your specific ship to see if there is an existing Roll Call thread for your specific sail date. If not, feel free to start one! Just follow the directions in How To: Create A New Roll Call, especially how they are to be titled. And don't worry about any responsibilities in starting a Cruise Critic Roll Call thread. Our Roll Calls belong to all members sailing that cruise; there is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread. Our Roll Calls are for Cruise Critic members sailing on the same cruise. They get to know one another online before their cruise so there will be all kinds of discussion in the Roll Call thread for their cruise!

If one already exists, click the Roll Call title to open the thread and read through the posts to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you. Then use the dark blue Reply to this topic button to post an introductory post about yourself. I feel sure your fellow Cruise Critic members will welcome you with replies. For more information regarding posting on our boards, please click here: How to: Reply to a Topic / Quote / Multi-Quote

The specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members may post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you.

If you ever need technical help in regard to using the Cruise Critic message board software, go to the Need Help Using the Forums? Check Here! forum. You will see a large amount of "How to..." pinned threads on the forum's first page. Also, browse through the threads in the forum looking for threads of interest. As with other forums on our boards, you may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are soooo happy to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

We were there a couple weeks ago on NCL.   Tendering went real well, no issues, quite quick.   We were not on a ship's excursion. However, they announced a couple days prior to register for a tender group, we could register on our TV in our room.    We were group 3 and we were off 10 or 15 minutes after the first group.   Not sure how celebrity handles, but they may have something similar.

Just a single data point:

We were on Celebrity Constellation June 2023 with a stop at Mykonos, arriving at 7am.

We took our time getting off the ship since we've been to Mykonos a few times but still were able to tender ashore to the Old Port by about 8:45am.

Not sure how common/much of a risk this is but twice during previous X cruises on Reflection (tho quite a few years ago) stopping in Mykonos, the itinerary showed we were supposed to tender but we ended up docking by the new port area further north.

Thank you for the input.
it is frustrating that you cannot get a definitive answer from Celebrity on what they are doing. I moved the start of our tour back to 10am to give us more leeway depending on where they put us ashore.
