seguincruiser Posted June 17, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2006 Going with my 10, 8, 6 yr olds next yr. Anything fun for the kids or should I let them do Camp Carnival this day. DH and I are saving so the kids can swim with dolphins in Cozumel (not the 6yr old, too young) and we want to Progreso on our own so any advice would be welcomed. GinnyJ Posted June 17, 2006 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2006 ...is there right now! When he returns, he will be able to answer all your questions. He knows the area well.
ldadar Posted June 18, 2006 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2006 I haven't been there, but we are planning on taking most of the kids (ages 2 to 13) to the Dzib ruins. We might leave the toddlers in camp to avoid a 45 minute bus ride. I've heard many kids like Camp so much, they beg to go, so don't feel bad if you want to leave them. seguincruiser Posted June 19, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted June 19, 2006 Thanks. Bought a book on the Cancun and Yucatan area today. Might just relax for a few hours on a nearby beach then go back to the boat. So much to do in Cozumel, this port seems a little disappointing? sherrintxs Posted June 21, 2006 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2006 When we were there in April we just hung out at the beach. My 8 yr old told everyone about Progreso. Sure, not as pretty as Cozumel, but we honestly had a great time. My 8 yr old even told me as we were in the water he was having the time of his life. He got to play with kids from the ship, local kids and pick up shells and he had a blast.
seguincruiser Posted June 21, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted June 21, 2006 Did you take a taxi or just walk away from the ship? Thanks
sherrintxs Posted June 22, 2006 #7 Share Posted June 22, 2006 When we got off the ship you walk down through a shopping area and there will be a free shuttle to take you into down, they let you off at the flea market, shopped there and came out and walked down to the beach, wasn't that far. Be ready though, at the beach locals will come up trying to sell you things. I am kicking myself for not buying a hammock though, man tried two different times, I will not be passing one up again next April. ;)
excitedcruiser Posted June 24, 2006 #8 Share Posted June 24, 2006 We saw many kids at the beaches in Progresso. Water is pretty shallow far out and the beaches are free. Only problem was vendors would occasionally pester you while you are enjoying the beach.
seguincruiser Posted June 28, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted June 28, 2006 Thanks everyone. Luckily my husband is fluent in spanish and can discourage these vendors. :) ;[p;'/;
hdawson Posted June 28, 2006 #10 Share Posted June 28, 2006 "Gratias, no" works for me. A polite no. After all, they're only trying to feed their family.
willandjonsmom Posted June 28, 2006 #11 Share Posted June 28, 2006 Quick word of advice from experience my Husband is also fluent, say no in english, they understand, do not speak spanish to them if you speak the language they try to sell you even harder, only use your Spanish when ordering a meal and if you have an emergency.Have a great trip. sherrintxs Posted June 29, 2006 #12 Share Posted June 29, 2006 I said NO a little too much and now I am kicking myself for a couple of things I did not buy that they brought around to the beach trying to sell us.
hdawson Posted July 8, 2006 #13 Share Posted July 8, 2006 Sherri. For a higher quality hammock I would suggest the Mercado (central market) in Merida, not the street/beach vendors who usually only offer the cheapest and lower quality.
