Questions about ketchican

Hi! We will be in Ketchican in September and are trying to save money. We want to go to Saxman Village and wondered how to go about it without taking an excursion. Can you walk, is there a bus, how much to get into the village? Also, has anyone been to the Deer Mountain Hatchery and was it worth it? Any other tips and ideas would be appreciated!:)

There have been several people who said you can walk, at least to the Hatchery/Raptor center. No one's mentioned walking to Saxman. I think it's about 3 miles out of town. Maybe more.

Are you on the 9/5 Silversea cruise?

we went with Sourdough tours and saw Totem Bight State Park, Saxman Village, and got tickets to Dolly's house for $45 pp. We really enjoyed our tour of Ketchikan! I know it was about 3 miles to Saxman...don't really think it is walkable. We were not charged a fee to get into Saxman Village or Totem Bight State Park. If you like Totem poles both Saxman and Totem Bight are not to be missed!

In my opinion, Saxman Village needs a tour, the commentary is necessary. Otherwise just stay in Ketchikan and look at the totems there. Yes, very easy to walk to the hatchery- very small, can get a combo ticket for the Totem Museum across from it, it of interest??

The Alaska Discovery center has a nice totem exhibit.

But overall, Ketchikan is a great walking town, pick up a walking tour map at the dock visitor center. Consider taking the funicular up to the Fox Westmark, go out the back, beautiful totems and walk back down the Married Man's trail, turn right, then to the Hatchery, take a look at the salmon ladder. Go through the city park and down Deermont- a look at residential life.
