Over a longer periode I made out a list of some hotels in Amsterdam.

Most of them are in central location, various prices.

Even more hotels and lots of info can be found on the website of the tourist office: http://www.vvvamsterdam.nl/

Maybe this helps:

We stayed at the ambassade on September 2 and it was very nice. The people were very friendly and helpful and it was on a quiet street but still close to everything. Oh and our bathroom was heaven: big tub and rain showerhead ummmmm. It is a little pricey but then alot of the accomodations in Amsterdam were. I felt we definately got our money's worth.

We used the Amsterdam Reservation Center for our booking at the

NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. We actually got it for a lower price than the Hotel's web site was quoting.

We loved the Hotel it is located right on Dam Square convientent to everything, Tram stops just across Square and we rode it everywhere, bought a 10 trip ticket.

the hotel gave us a room on the 6th floor with a balcony overlooking Amsterdam. Great view and very clean well appointed room.

This is just my two cents. I'm not an expert, but have spent several weeks in Amsterdam over the years. If I had two days there, I wouldn't choose something too "centrally located". Definitely in the old city, but out in one of the pretty neighbourhoods, not right downtown--it is very busy and teeming with tourists. I don't have any specific recommendations, since most people want something more upscale than we do, but look around the Museum area, or the Jordaan. The last place we stayed was the Kap Hotel, which is a few minutes walk to Museumplein, but it is one of the many small canal-house hotels, with no elevators. But I have read there are some very nice hotels in the museum district itself, between Vondel Park and Museumplein. The Jordaan is also a very pretty area, close to lots of attractions, and it has some very nice hotels (again, I haven't stayed in any of them.
