How formal are formal nights?

We will be going on our first cruise on the Carnival Glory this Saturday. My wife is packing a nice dress and I just want to bring a nice sports jacket (to be worn with shirt and tie of course). I am not even sure if I have an actual suit. My guess is that will be fine but please correct me if I am wrong.

You should be fine with the sports jacket. (shirt and tie or course.)

The RCCL cruise I took in January, only about 25% of the men had tuxedos on, most of the rest had suits or sport coats. Probably another 25% or so didnt even have a tie on.

This sets my mind at ease and since this will be a much needed vacation I am glad I don't have to worry about what to wear.

The one thing I liked about the Golden Princess, on formal nights 95% of the men were in suits and 95% of the suits were tuxes. It was nice to see. DW & I like the formal nights.

I was on Glory last year. Your attire is just fine and if you'd like, you also can treat your wife to the Emerald Supper Club where most of the men wore sport coats, most with ties. A very nice dinner indeed:) in an intimate atmosphere.
