clm101798 Posted January 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2007 How does the cruiseline decide who to offer an upgrade or upsell to. Do they just randomly pick people in a certain catagory? Does purchasing something like the romance package or honeymoon package make a difference? Do they only do this for the people already in oceanview or higher, or do they do this for lowly people like me :) in the inside cabins? Just wondering.... Arwenmark Posted January 19, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2007 I was told that it is based on the original fare you paid, say you paid 1500 pp for a minisuite or balcony or whatever, and subsequently the prices dropped and so most people that booked paid less then you did for that category, you would be in line for an upgrade or perhaps offered an upsell and the upsell price would be less for you than if they offered the same upsell to someone who paid 1100 for that same grade cabin as you did. Does that make sense? It is done by the computers that check who paid what and do averages and such.
Vyhanek Posted January 19, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2007 Do they care how the reservation was booked? I mean do the cruisers who booked directly with NCL get called first before someone who booked with a TA or does that matter?
dwrist Posted January 19, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 19, 2007 My orginal cabin went up in price. The only thing in common on all three cruises were the popular cabins theory, which we have always booked. :)

Browezilla Posted January 19, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2007 I suspect "new" passengers to the line are offered bumps (when available) as "incentive" to cruise more with the line.
shoreguy Posted January 19, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2007 I don't think anybody nows for sure. Price paid may in fact play a roll. The fact is it is a pyramid game. The offer upsells to people and cabins they can upsell others into and seem to work there way down the ship. Upsell Owners Suite to Garden Villa ($5000) , AB to open AA ($2000), AD to open AB ($1000), AF to open AD ($800), Balcony to to open AF($500), Inside /outside to Balconies ($250) One move creates over $9000 in new revenue. As time goes on and higher categories remain open they expand the categories they call. Who in each category they call remains a mystery. If all the low cost cabins are sold out they use upsells to open them up and book more last minute bargain hunters. $100 to go from N to F or even $200 to go to a balcony. Resell the N GTY for $1800 - $2000 in additional revenue.
calmac Posted January 20, 2007 #8 Share Posted January 20, 2007 Of course, if you're from the UK, or anywhere else outside of USA or Canada, you are excluded from receiving an upsell offer (I'll now climb down from my high horse again). You could retire to the States and cruise.:D :D :D Couldn't resist. Seriously, do you know why you do not? It can't be the cost of the phone call. Are there special laws there that keeps NCL from offering?
browniegirl Posted January 20, 2007 #11 Share Posted January 20, 2007 Hi there, our travel agent was contacted by NCL a few weeks back, we are on the Jewel on Jan 28th in a mini-suite and were offered an upsell to a Penthouse....our travel agent turned it down on our behalf because we have adjoining cabins with my grandparents, my kids are across the hall and my parents are around the corner!!! I am completely bummed about not having a penthouse but at the same time, we are really excited about our aft cabins and in the future when just my husband and I go on our next cruise, we'll pray for another upsell offer!!!!
