DonnyF Posted January 30, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2007 What’s the difference between a passport and a birth certificate? You need a birth certificate to get the passport and what else ? Money ? Is there something else ?
serene56 Posted January 30, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2007 http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html birth certificate and drivers license and of course money. (they keep the birth certificate and money. You get the birth certificate back in the mail when they send you your passport) allow at least 8 weeks to be processed
mr green Posted January 30, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2007 In this day and age a birth cetificate is apt to hold up the line, usually a passport does not. This isbecause authorities KNOW that the birth cetificate has been checked, along with other material. john

agabbymama Posted January 30, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2007 A Passport is a verified form of United States Identification with a photo of you and a number issued by the United States informing other countries or persons who you are and that you are a United States Citizen. And I believe one is needed for foreign travel everywhere in the World. Some countries even require a Visa besides your Passport. A birth certificate is a document that the state issued upon your birth. Does not generally have a photo or description of you as an adult. It usually tells what you weighed and length at birth. And if you are female, doesn't necessarily have the same name that your passport would have. While you do need a birth certificate and a photo ID to apply for a Passport, once you have the Passport, you only need new photos every 10 years to renew the Passport. Hope this clarifies things for you. Get your passport, it will be needed more in the future than ever before.
elleluv Posted January 30, 2007 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2007 Even if you aren't required to have a passport for your cruise, I would strongly recommend you have one... With the recent change in requirements, you wouldn't be able to fly into the US from outside the US without a passport. So if you don't have one and you have a medical emergency or there was an emergency at home while on the ship you wouldn't be able to fly home. It doesn't make sense to cruise without a passport any longer.
