Were You Ever Scared On A Cruise?

Recommended Posts

Our first cruise was a 3 day on the Carnival Fantasy in 1994. That was one of the biggest ships at the time. The captain said we were on the edge of a tropical storm returning to Pt Canaveral from Nassau. It started during dinner by the time we went to the show the ship was bopping up & down. Half of the crew was sick and they cancelled parts of the show. People were getting sick in the hallways by then we retreated to our cabin. We had to use the stairs & had to wait for the ship to get in the right position or you couldn't get up or down. We had a balcony room, I was sorry I looked out all you could see was white caps and this big ship going up and down! Got in bed & prayed hoping I wouldn't fall out of bed.

Our next cruise was this year 13 years later. It was uneventful and wonderful. Our next one will be next year. Then hopefully one a year after that.

Okay, so many of you CC regulars that we all know and love (you know who you are Merion Mom, Critterchick, Sue, Phoenix... to name a few!) must remember my frantic posts before my first cruise on the Radiance in February 2005  I was scared of EVERYTHING!!! In my mind, everything was going to happen on that cruise....everything that I was having nightmares about for the weeks leading up to the day I boarded.

I am happy to report that all was well until.......the very last night of the cruise. I was in the casino with 2 of my friends just before midnight, when all of a sudden the lights flickered, then sizzled....then went OUT! The whole ship plunged into sudden darkness. My heart began to race, my palms sweaty and anxiety took over!!!! I went to the bar in the casino and asked the bartender if this had ever happend before (praying that he would say it was a semi-normal occurance) but he said that he had been on the ship for 5 years and had never seen anything like it - and HE looked worried

My DH and DD were sleeping in our cabin on deck 10 and all I could think of was being separated from them if this was in fact an emergency. I bolted out of the casino in the dark - ran to the stairs (no elevators were working) and ran up 6 decks of stairs! When I finally arrived at deck 10 I thought I was going to pass out!!! But wait.....it gets worse! On deck 10, I see a woman and her 2 small children in their life jackets asking where their muster station is!!!! The woman shouts that there is smoke in the hallway!!! Now I am on the verge of a full fledged freak out!!!! I take off down the cabin hallway and sure enough I smell smoke too!!!!!! I barely make it to our cabin door......open it.......and DH wakes up - I can barely get the words out (as I am gasping for breath because of my run) all I manage to say is "smoke" "muster station" "lights out" - DH thinks I am out of my mind  Then he pokes his head out into the hallway and sees the ship is in complete darkness except for the emergency lighting and now HE starts to freak out too!!! All I can think of is that my worst pre-cruise nightmares are coming true!!!

By now the ship has been in total darkness for 17 minutes......then we spot an RCI crewmember heading to the crew stairs and we ask him what is going on?????? He states that yes, the power is out, the ship is at a stand still and the smoke we smell is the emergency generator kicking in...there is NO fire (thank the good lord!!!)

A few minutes later (it is now well past midnight) the Captain's voice comes over the loudspeaker - he tells us there was a power outage, they still haven't figured why - but the power has now been restored and we are safely back on our way to Miami :)

I have to say......I have never been so scared in my life. It was a feeling that everything was totally out of my control......and I am the consumate control freak!!!

Obviously I did not let this experience cloud my feelings about cruising - since then I have been on 4 other cruises and I am happy to report....without incident!!!:D
