My review of the Wyndham Old San Juan

My first impressions of the Wyndham were pretty good, actually. When you pull up, the main entrance is in a small alley, making it feel a little old world. Once inside, you are greated by a nice staircase and to the right...the casino. Now, since DW and I are not big gamblers, this did not really mean anything to us. But from what I gather, people were enjoying it.

We had joined WyndhamByRequest (as I suggest you do), so we were excited about recieving the exclusive amenities, including the following:

  • Free local calls
  • Personalized Room including:

Room location

Pillow type - foam or feather

Newspaper

One welcome snack preference

One welcome beverage preference

Extras in your room (coffee, towels, pillows, blankets)

  • Best available room on day of arrival

This is were the hotel started to go wrong. First off, the phone was broken. It was fixed before we checked out, but not soon enough.

The room location, I don't know for sure, but that will be addressed farther down.

The pillow-type, I asked for foam, got feather. Did not get a newspaper.

You fill out a welcome snack and beverage thing online, and we requested M&M's and Diet Coke. We got pretzels and Cranberry Juice.

Now, for the crowning achievement in thier blatent disregard for the ByRequest Program: when we asked if any upgrades were available, the desk attendent said, "Free ones?" We said, "Well, yes," and we showed him our ByRequest membership card. He said that there were no free upgrades available, but that if we wanted to pay more, we could get upgraded.

The room was blah and the hotel in general was dirty. All in all, I guess it was not bad, but for what you pay, it just is not worth the price. Wyndhams are supposed to be top notch. I have stayed in nicer Travelodges than the Wyndham Old San Juan. The lobby is so small, that if a group of ten arrives, you can't get off of the elevator...seriously. We did not eat at the restaurants, so I cannot comment on that.

Overall, I would give it a 4 out of 10.

ALSO, it is not near the pier where the Princess ships dock. Not that any are closer, but don't think that this is prime location for Princess.

I have stayed there as well and can't figure out why everybody raves about it. We enjoyed the Marriott so much more when we stayed there. We have also stayed several times at the Tres Palmas guesthouse and enjoy that very much. Both of these are head and shoulders above the Wyndham IMHO. BK

Jon,

We stayed there on 7/11. I have to agree with you on several points. The lobby is very small and when we arrived at noon, the lobby was packed with everyone that was trying to check out and grab a taxi. You couldn't move without tripping over someone's luggage. It took us about 20 minutes in line to check in and another 15 to get the attention of a bellman to check our bags.

Once that happened, we were off and running. Our room, however was very nice. We had a 2 room waterfront suite that was huge and very clean.

The property is older and reminded me of some of the older hotels I have stayed in larger cities (NYC or Chicago).

I think it's merit is in the location. You can certainly walk about anywhere from there.

I've stayed there on a few occasions pre-cruise. People's reports are right on!!

The good point is its location right in OSJ.

The bad, however and it keeps getting worse, are the price and what you get for it; the amenities; the cleanliness; and, the overall lack of friendliness. There's this older gentleman who works the restaurant during breakfast and lunch, and talk about one unfriendly personality. Oh, and don't ever eat dinner there -- it's not very good, their figuring that they have a captive audience for first timers.

The good again is the location, but if the bad continues to grow I'm out-of-there!!

To the OP>>>You should copy and paste your comments to Wyndham by Request on their website????

Ouch, this is not good to hear. We have a conceige level room booked for our Oct. 30th pre-cruise stay. If it has really gone downhill that badlly maybe I should take my chances with priceline? We may end up there anyhow but at least it wouldn't be at $185 for the night.

We stayed at the Wyndham Condado a couple of years ago. It was ok. Expensive, but ok. Not great service, annoying little things, like the maid wouldn't leave washcloths or only left 1 towel. Food was really expensive; go down the street. There is lots there. We stayed there 6 days in March, 02.

Stayed at the Marriott Courtyard post cruise earlier this month. The service there was awful. Rooms were ok, reasonably clean. Nice beach, nice pool.

We had dinner at the Embassy Suites Outback with some friends. The lobby & atrium are very nice. Their suite was great & the pool was terrific. Beach is about a 2 block walk, but with free drinks and free breakfast this is where we will be staying the end of Oct. for our cruise.

Priceline is a bit stingy with rooms in San Juan and may not be available until the last minute.
