FitzLA Posted May 10, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 10, 2007 There is a fire burning there right now. Evacuations have been ordered in the Avalon area, around the Casino and some homes. So far, it has burned 500+ acres. Here is the Long Beach webcam which shows the smoke from the fire on catalina. http://www.longbeach.gov/about/ABC_webcam.asp

MilliesMom Posted May 10, 2007 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2007 Hope everyone will remain safe. We use to live in CA and fires can spread so quickly. This is so early in the season for this many fires already.

I bet you got a lot of smoke from the Griffith fire. We live very close, about 2 miles from Griffith Park. We got some great pics....check out my webshots album. It was a scary night. My office is in Los Feliz, and that was way too close for comfort. Only a few blocks away. Here is my link. http://news.webshots.com/album/558998474HBhTLX Hope everyone will remain safe. We use to live in CA and fires can spread so quickly. This is so early in the season for this many fires already. The fire season never ended from last year. We had almost no rain this year. Around 2" or so. We are so dry, that this is going to be a horrible fire season.

I remember a couple years back when we had those humongous fires in the SGV, we could see the fire RUNNING down the side of the mountains from our back yard, the speed at which that beast moves is unbelievable! It is very scary. We saw this fire start as something very small, then it seemed that they had it under control. All of a sudden, it just took off and tripled in size. Seemed like it was just seconds
Kurbanfan Posted May 11, 2007 #7 Share Posted May 11, 2007 Yep.....Florida is known for their hurricanes and us Californians have the earthquakes and fires...... Just saw the Catalina fire on the local news. Good thing the ships are not due there until next week. The 4 dayers are on their way home. I bet they are getting some good shots from the ships. They usually circle in front of the island the day before they come into port.
Darlipoo Posted May 11, 2007 #8 Share Posted May 11, 2007 If any ships decide not to go to Catalina they'll just bring you to San Diego instead probably. More to see here anyways.
FitzLA Posted May 11, 2007 Author #9 Share Posted May 11, 2007 If you look at this webcam in Avalon on Catalina, you can see the the flames are VERY close to the town of Avalon and approaching as we speak. Plans are in order to evacuate the entire island. Please keep the people of Avalon and the entire island in your prayers. http://www.watchthewater.org/beach_images.cfm?bid=61&p=
Oppgaard Posted May 11, 2007 #10 Share Posted May 11, 2007 We have been to Catalina numerous times on the Viking Serenade, Monarch, etc. Have always enjoyed ourselves and thought the golf cart tour to be the best ever. We are scheduled to be there on the Paradise on Tuesday. Hopefully all will be OK. We know what fire is like living where we do and having to evacuate. Our thoughts are with all the people there. Well, hopefully everything will be okay by then, but don't count on going. The entire island is being evacuated, and homes are now burning as we speak. The fire has entered the town of Avalon now. And 30 or more homes are threatened as well. It is totally out of control and no containment at all yet. Very scary situation.
number1cruiser Posted May 11, 2007 #12 Share Posted May 11, 2007 My Aunt and Uncle have lived on Catalina for 15 years, I'm going to try and call them this morning to check on them. I'm sure they are in Long Beach by now. Luckly the also have a home in Long Beach that they can stay at. They both work on the Island. I feel really bad for these people, The town is really pretty and I hope they can save some of it. It sure doesn't sound good though. I will let you know what I find out. MissKise Posted May 14, 2007 #13 Share Posted May 14, 2007 The fire on Catalina is almost contained and away from the city of Avalon. The residents were going back this past weekend and today (Monday) they have allowing other people back on the island. It looks like a go for the cruise ships, and I am sure the business part of Catalina will be happy to see everyone coming into town. You may not be able to rent golf carts, since they are trying to contain the fire and equipment is still on the island making the roads hard to pass. But the air and water are clean, and smoke free! Enjoy the island!
