Need advice: Livorno to Lucca

Recommended Posts

We've been to Livorno before, as well as Florence and Pisa. We'd like to go to Lucca, which is fairly close, but aren't sure if it's feasible on our own. Any suggestions? We'll be there on June 27 with HAL Prinsendam.

Thanks

Last July we rented a car ahead of time, the pickup is right at the dock in Livorno, I think it was Avis. Easy route from Livorno to Lucca, a major interstate goes right past Lucca. Big suggestion, get the best directions back to the dock BEFORE you leave the dock. Once you are on your way back you realize that all of Livorno coast is a gigantic port. With all the tall industrial bulidings believe it or not, it is very hard to find your ship, you really can't see the ships due to the large industrial buldings blocking your way. The more specific directions back exactly to your dock is crucial, or you could end up driving around, very frustrated for a long time. Have a great time, Lucca is beautiful.

Like abosi says, the best way would be with train. It would be very easy. I don't know how early you can leave the ship, but on that day they have a 9:11 train with a changeover in Pisa and arrival in Lucca at 10:15. The next one is a 10:00 departure, also with a change in Pisa and arrival in Lucca at 10:45.

As there are 4 of us travelling ( 2 couples ) we have decided to go with Tuscany by taxi. We are doing both Pisa and Lucca and the driver picks us up from the ship and takes us right back again after the tour. He will make it as personal as you want in the time provided. We found them excellent to deal with and their price is 240 euros for a six hour Tour.
