Well our cruise on the empress was cancelled, the logistics of getting family here to watch the house and pets precluded changing dates...they are already here. As only a suggestion, I would definately stay overnight in Anchorage, rather than Seward the 22nd. You are taking a chance by leaving 3am, very dark road, wildlife, etc.

I also would not be at the McKinley lodge for 3 days, it will be 100 miles round trip every time you go back and forth to Talkeetna, it will get old after the first trip. I do think it far better to stay in town, with the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge definately on par with the Princess lodge, and just as excellent views of McKinley, if out. My opinion only, McKinley lodge at most is a place to stay without a car, one day. I wouldn't be there any longer without one. Do you have some reason for spending all this time there??? Hopefully you have 2 for 1 discounts etc??? Essentially few activities otherwise.

thanks budgetqueen, we got a 2 for 1 to mkinley. so didnt cost much. I was going to go home then but flights are booked and wasnt able to use my first classs upgrades, so we thought we would go there and hang out and relax for a few days, we'll be pretty much done by then...it would be better to stay in anchorage the night before brooks, already had the cabin paid for and am trying to cancel but havent heard back yet...

Not to offend you, but this is a prime example to others to watch for "bargain" coupons for accommodations. Certainly "two for one" is cheaper, but is it really a place you want to be spending your time? Could you have found another place for the second night (personally for me, for both nights!) that would be a better use of your time? Talkeetna? Denali NP? I would not spend all that time going to Alaska to spend two nights at a remote lodge like McKinley unless I had a keen interest in hiking (which I do, but even then I have found other hikes that I like that are in places I have really enjoyed or will enjoy next month).

Moral of the story - don't book something just because it has a coupon. Look at all your options and best use of your time and money. Sorry to perhaps rain on your parade, but I wanted to give my opinion.

Having said that, I think your itinerary is great. I trust Brooks will be nice to you and let you see some bears. They don't start in full force until July. I am going there July 9-12.

Good for you - I like your itinerary, with a few suggestions.

13th - I recommend sleeping - you had a long flight, and Alaska is 4 hours off Florida.

14-15th - For breakfast and/or lunch, we like the Bake Shop, about a mile from Alyeska. It's behind what used to be called the Jade Shop, and now I think the sign just said Gift Shop.

19th - If you want to go to Seldovia, we liked the Discovery which left Homer at 11:00am (they want you there 1/2 hour early). We had a great tour of the bay, seeing lots of birds, otters, etc., spent almost 3 hours in Seldovia, where we had lunch and looked around, and were back in Homer about 6:15.

22nd - :( I'm concerned about that early morning drive - if you liked Alyeska, maybe you could go back there?

28th - If it's raining in Anchorage, I really recommend the Anchorage Museum of History and Art at 7th and A. :D Right now they have two exhibits of native art - both old and recent. And you can have lunch there, but we usually go to the Federal Building across the street). Whatever you decide to do, it sounds like you'll have a great time. Nancy

Hi,

We were also booked on the Empress (May 19th sailing) and the ship hit rock just 4 days before we were to leave :(

Our schedules were somewhat flexible and we rebooked on the Empress for Aug. 4th. Hopefully that will be a good week for us to be there. I'm looking forward to it.

Hope your land visit is great!
