Cruising from Shanghai, China

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of booking my first trip to Asia and it will be by cruise. I have just a few questions :

  • Which airport is nearest to the ship terminal for Shanghai?
  • How far is it from that airport to the ship?
  • How far is the airport from downtown?
  • How near is the ship to downtown Shanghai?

Thank you so much, in advance for your help!

Steve,

The old airport is far closer to the city. There is an expressway from the Bund area that goes straight to the airport. By taxi, about 30 minutes.

The old cruise terminal is on the Wangpu river, just around the corner from the Peace Hotel, which is at the end of the bund. That puts you basically right downtown.

Right beside the cruise terminal is a small Chinese Navy office. That office occuipies the building that was the Japanese Embassy before WWII. On the other side of the terminal is the Russian Consulate (formerly the Russian Embassy before WWII) This building is the only piece of property in all of China (By special treaty with Russia) that is not owned by the Chinese Government.

This picture is taken from the New Cruise Terminal in Shanghai which is located in the area of Tilanqiao. North-East of the Bund.

From the OCEAN Cruise Ships starts like here the COSTA ALLEGRA.

As you can see here on the dusty picture:

It's no walking distance to the Bund.

If you are trying to explain the cab driver to get you there - may be this help:

It's 800, Da Ming South Road

(in Chinese ba bai - Da Ming Nan Lu)

Refering to this terminal to your questions:

1. If you are travelling internationally you will arrive 99% in Pudong Airport.

The old airport Hongqiao only serves domestic areas. Before you have the idea to transfer in Beijing: There you need to collect and change the terminal yourself!!! So forget it!

2. If you take the Maglev train to Pudong Longyang Road Station - that's 8 minutes and I would say approx. 20 minutes (subject to traffic - especially tunnels and bridges congestion during rush hour!!!) from Longyang Road Station. If you take a taxi it's about 1 hour (a little more) from Pudong to the Ocean Cruise Terminal.

3. It's about 1 hour to the city. Although best way would be again 8 minutes on Maglev Train and about 15 minutes by Metro No. 2 to Nanjing Road (Shopping District).

4. About 8-12 minutes to Nanjing Road.

But if you are going on RIVER Cruise on Yangtse one potential cruise terminal could be this one:

1./2. This is about 45-60 minutes away from Pudong Airport as this is well connected by the ring highway around Shanghai. Public transport to complicated: Maglev - Metro 2 - Metro 3 from there about 10-15 minutes to walk.

4. About 45-60 minutes from the downtown. But best to use Metro 3.

Have a great time in Shanghai.
