Summer Cruising

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've never cruised during the summer, usually Jan, Mar or Apr. Was interested in hearing about some of your good and bad experiences with cruising in the summer during hurricane season. Is it way to hot and humid, too much turbulant seas, etc. Debating whether to take advantage of going on Explorer of the Seas in July or Aug for a 5 night Bermuda cruise.

Post your thoughts and help me decide, thanks! :D

We did the Explorer 5 day last year in middle of Sept and we sailed between two hurricanes. The weather though was gorgeous though on the way back we hit some rough seas (20 foot) though the only reason we knew it was because we went on the Oceanographic Lab tour and they told us. There was some rocking but barely felt it. The ship is big and with the stabilizers the motion was kept to a minimal.

They will do whatever it takes to keep the ship, crew and passengers out of harm's way. They could change the itinerary if a hurricane is heading for your destination.

It was so iffy last year when we were about a week out from sailing that I ran and bought a couple of extra pairs of capris in case we ended up in Canada (don't laugh it happened to a sailing a couple of years ago) And we also printed out the list of shore excursions for the Canadian itinerary, just in case.

You really can only do the Bermuda during the spring/summer/fall months so if you want to see this beautiful island you are much more limited as when to sail.

We always travel in the summer because we have teachers in our group. We have now taken about 14 cruises and have never had a bad experience with weather. The closest we came was a few years ago when we "out ran" Hurricane Charlie.

The weather is a little hotter, but we expect that. As long as you know it is the hurricane season and you can get diverted there is no problem.
