Tours in Hamburg

I will be in Hamburg in Sept. and am wondering if I can walk from the cruise ship to the city centre. I'm interested in taking an Alster Boat Tour, however I'm not sure how to get there on my own or if it's advisable to take a shore excursion from the cruise ship which offers a city and boat tour.
