usavvy2 Posted July 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2007 from what I've read, you buy wine and beer at a liquor store (as opposed to a grocery store in some states). A search for liquor stores in Anchorage brought up a litany of choices; not sure which one is closest to the airport but you could always hail a cab and ask them or look these streets up on mapquest: Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 565-7629 6411 A St Oaken Keg Spirit Shops Inc, (907) 561-1944 6401 A St Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 349-6324 2101 Abbott Rd # 11 Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-2810 1725 Abbott Rd In & Out Liquor, (907) 563-3604 3601 Arctic Blvd In & Out Liquors, (907) 561-5112 1100 W Benson Blvd Party Time/Boniface Liquors, (907) 337-9392 341 Boniface Pkwy # H Brown Jug, (907) 277-2813 131 S Bragaw St Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 277-7022 1555 Bragaw St Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-0910 5600 Debarr Rd Dimond Liquor, (907) 349-7646 1901 W Dimond Blvd Alaska Marketplace, (907) 344-7782 800 E Dimond Blvd # 100 Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-1210 4000 W Dimond Blvd Value Liquor, (907) 349-3712 601 W Dimond Blvd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 279-9314 525 W Fireweed Ln Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-0210 1340 Gambell St Spirits Of Alaska, (907) 274-2818 1139 Gambell St Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-1310 1501 Huffman Rd Value Liquor, (907) 243-0749 7141 Jewel Lake Rd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 274-5441 119 Klevin St Party Time Plaza Liquors, (907) 561-2299 5520 Lake Otis Pkwy Hollywood Liquor Store, (907) 272-1119 867 E Loop Rd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 337-2813 171 Muldoon Rd Value Liquor, (907) 338-2411 283 Muldoon Rd Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-0510 1650 W Northern Lights Blvd Alaska Marketplace, (907) 337-6514 5530 E Northern Lights Blvd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 333-9911 5400 E Northern Lights Blvd Alaska Marketplace, (907) 274-5350 1400 W Northern Lights Blvd Brown Jug, (907) 277-2210 2220 E Northern Lights Blvd Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-0610 600 E Northern Lights Blvd Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-1710 7731 E Northern Lights Blvd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 563-3008 4140 Old Seward Hwy Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 522-9544 8840 Old Seward Hwy George's Liquor Store, (907) 349-6023 10240 Old Seward Hwy Gold Rush Liquor, (907) 344-2200 8661 Old Seward Hwy Safeway, (907) 561-7540 3801 Old Seward Hwy Value Liquor, (907) 344-0716 11580 Old Seward Hwy Yukon Beverages Inc, (907) 569-3800 3901 Old Seward Hwy Yukon Spirits, (907) 569-3800 3801 Old Seward Hwy Oaken Keg Spirit Shops, (907) 339-5210 3101 Penland Pkwy Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 279-4350 2534 Spenard Rd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 243-4363 3904 Spenard Rd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 563-3716 3727 Spenard Rd Brown Jug Famous Liquor Stores, (907) 562-2359 3561 E Tudor Rd # 10 New Party Time Liquors II, (907) 243-2640 2446 E Tudor Rd Party Time Liquors, (907) 563-9550 2422 E Tudor Rd Downtown Wine & Spirits, (907) 258-0930 930 W 5th Ave Mom & Pops Liquor & Grocery, (907) 563-4446 601 W 36th Ave #
tee_harbor Posted July 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2007 Yeah, Alaska's not quite a 'wine shop' sort of place yet. Hopefully, an Anchorage resident will chime in with some suggestions, but usavvy is right; grocery stores can't sell liquor in their aisles, but nearly every grocery store will have a liquor store attached. You just have to pay at a separate counter. A place like Fred Meyer, a big Walmart like retailer, sells wine. Costco has nice wine selection. I doubt any of these big retailers are downtown, however. You may be stuck with liquor stores, which tend to sell to a different sort of customer than someone looking for a nice bottle of wine. ;) The big box stores will have better prices. I lived in CA for years, and can't get myself to pay AK prices for wine. Even a usually low-priced brand like Ravenwood costs over $10 in Juneau.

nole62 Posted July 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2007 The Brown Jug has a very nice selection of wine. Our bus was to meet us across the street. Everyone on our land pkg was there!!!

Just saw the list, the one we used was right in "downtown".

AkSusan Posted July 8, 2007 #8 Share Posted July 8, 2007 I just got out my trusty new ACS yellow pages and the only liquor store downtown is the Downtown Wine & Spirits at 930 W. 5th Avenue. Never have been in it though, so I'm not sure of their selection. Also they are right you can't buy liquor in our grocery stores but Carrs/Safeway and Fred Meyers have liquor stores attached. Our Walmarts do not have liquor. Our Brown Jugs are our stand alone liquor stores that I frequent (also our Oaken Kegs - the liquor stores at the Carrs/Safeway stores and Sam's and Costco). Brown Jug has a great selection of about any kind you would want. The closest Brown Jug would be at the corner of Northern Lights & Spenard or the closet Oaken Keg would be at Northern Lights and Minnesota. These would require a cab ride though. 4_THE_HALIBUT Posted July 8, 2007 #9 Share Posted July 8, 2007 And if you go to the Oaken Keg attached to the Carrs/Safeway, make sure you get a Customer Card. Will give you a pretty good discount, plus, if you buy a 6-pack of wine (you select the 6), you get an additional 10% off. You also get a carton that holds the 6 bottle.s
AkSusan Posted July 8, 2007 #10 Share Posted July 8, 2007 And the 10% is also off the sale price if what you pick is on sale and recently found out it just doesn't have to be 6 of wine, they'll give you 10% off of any 6 spirits (last time it was 3 big bottles of margaritas and 3 bottles of wine for me). Actually Fred Meyer's does the same thing too. Susan in Anchorage :)
