Questions about Wyndham Old San Juan

We have booked a room here on the conceige level for our pre-nite stay in October. I have recently read some not so good reviews for this hotel. Has anyone stayed here recently & what did you think? We were really looking forward to staying here & being in the heart of Old San Juan but don't want to spend $185 if it's going to turn out to be a bad hotel. I have tried priceline a few times but so far no luck. We have until 4 p.m. Oct. 29th to cancel so I have plenty of time yet to find something else.

Thanks,

Karen

Puerto Rico is not a great hotel market from the standpoint that rates are high and service levels are generally low... so you are likely to read some negative reviews of just about every hotel.

Continue to try Priceline as San Juan is notorious for not releasing inventory until close to check-in.

What is the actual date of your stay (and how high have you bid on Priceline)?

We will be there Oct. 29th for 1 night. I've bid up to $85 so far with no luck. I understand & can deal with the service issues, but I'm seeing reports that the hotel is not clean which concerns me. All we really needed was a clean, comfortable room and thought by booking the higher conceige level we would have that.

Thanks,

Karen

I stayed there in November 99 so it may be too long ago for you but the hotel was very clean. I was put on the concierge floor and the breakfast room was terrific, especially when you see the price for breakfast in their restaurant. The service in the hotel was excellent. I enjoyed the live music on the patio at night but was glad to be in a quiet room not facing the front. The unpleasant surprise was how much tax was added to the bill. It seems that hotels in PR with casino have an extra tax. It's a good thing I won enough money there to pay for the room. The last time I stayed in San Juan I managed to snag a room at the Caribe Hilton for $79. which was a bargain. I enjoyed it more than Wyndham because the hotel has its own beach. I am a member of Hilton Honors so I had priority check-in, complimentary cocktail hour and breakfast. People complained about this hotel too but it was wonderful, especially for only a 1 night stay.

Thanks for the comments. I have been trying priceline without luck, I'd be willing to chance staying here for under $100 but not the $185 we are paying. Going to look into the Coral Princess Inn, it's around $100, free breakfast and every review on Trip Advisor was Excellent. Dh says he doesn't really care if we go to Old San Juan or not as we have been there several times on cruises. Figure the $$ we save can pay for our cab fares.
