Spent many happy teen days at White House Subs. If it is still there, try Tony's on Atlantic Avenue not far from White House Subs. Excellent pizza and subs too...........brings back fond memories!

OK if you really want the BEST Philly cheese steak you will find it in Roxoborough (still in Phila., but not in Center City). Philly magazine runs a "Best of" every year and D'Alessando's & Chubby's come in 1st & 2nd consistantly. Both are located on Henry Avenue directly across the street from each other and both have cheese steaks to die for. Make sure you arrive hungry cause these two places make a BIG cheese steak. If you can't get out of Center City to try these two places there is a fantastic little joint on 2nd & Snyder called John's. His Roast Pork sandwich is something you will remember forever. Cheese Steaks are great also. This place is easy to miss (vy small white one story bldg) with extremely limited hrs. I think he closes at 3PM - if you get to Phila check out these places for a "true" cheese steak.

IMHO Steve's Prince of Steaks at 7200 Bustleton in NE Philly serves up the best cheesesteak. And it's one of the few places that serves up chocolate sodas. They serve grilled slices of steak on their sandwiches. Dalessandros and Chubby's both chop their meat into oblivion and when mixed with the melted cheese, you could use the mixture to patch potholes. Chubby's does have a great neon sign though.

John's Roast Pork is great. Get there by 2 PM.

hi mstyrs,

the borgata has a great cheese steak. i've never had the one in phila., but this is large enough for two people and good.

the white house sub house is famous in a.c. a lot of the restrs. in a.c. get their bread from Rando's. it's the best i think because atlantic city was rated to have the best water and that's very important for bread making.

hope you win some money while you're there. the BORGATA is my favorite casino.

good luck

The exclusive bakery to White House is Formica. Rando's used to be one of 3 that supplied rolls to WH, the 3rd being the now closed Atlantic City Bakery. All 3 of these places were within a block of WH and the rolls would just be walked over to the restaurant. Whether there was a set delivery schedule, or WH just called when they needed them I don't know. Despite the similarity of the rolls from all 3, there used to be very subtle differences, and you could specify whose roll you wanted them to use for your sandwich.

10 or so years ago, some entrepreneurs who were members of or had ties to the Formica family opened an Atlantic City style sub shop in the Hilton Las Vegas. At that time the WH went to great lengths to let people know that they were not affiliated with that venture, and they stopped using Formica as a supplier. I don't know if the Las Vegas shop is still operating in it's original incarnation, but now Formica is WH's exclusive baker. Maybe Rando's committed an even bigger sin. Or, now I think WH has an interest in, or even outright owns Formica. Formica is across the street and just down the block on Arctic. You can buy the same sub rolls there used in the restaurant.

Gee - I just spoke to someone who works there today, as a matter of fact, and was asking him about all of the things special about the White House. He gave me quite a history. He did say they they get their bread from both bakeries. I think it is Randos that he said only bakes until late morning and Formica bakes all day. (I hope I have remembered this correctly, Signman, because you certainly do seem to have the best info!) As they always want to use really fresh bread, they may use Formica more. My personal favorite was the Atlantic City Italian Bakery. Any trip to AC began (you had to get there early in the day) with a dozen of their hoagie rolls! I could barely make the hour trip home with the smell of the fresh bread calling me! Oh, how I miss them!
