bawn2cruz Posted September 27, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2007 Way back in 1983 we were passengers on the America Hawaii vessel s.s. Independence - from memory a sister ship to the Constitution - at the time Australia won the America's Cup. I think we in Kauai at the time. Any info on what happened to the ships and the shipping line would be welcome. Roy Mlebourne, Australia

chasetf Posted September 29, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 29, 2007 You may have already noticed this thread further down the page: SS Independence?? - Cruise Critic Message Boards I will add this one which is more current (but further down the list). http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=468839 It includes a couple of pictures I took of her. The first is when we sailed her in 2001 and the second is at her berth in SF across from SF Giants stadium in China Basin in May 2007
Liat Posted October 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2007 The former Independence is owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines and has been renamed Oceanic. It is berthed in San Francisco. Its sister ship. Constitution, which had its most famous voyage transporting Grace Kelly's wedding party to Monaco for her marriage to Prince Ranier, sank while being towed to China. I remember Independence vividly; having had the opportunity to inspect it completely in New York prior to its first sailing after its shakedown cruise. My brother was employed by American Export Lines, which had these ships built and operated them on European crossings for several years, and he arranged this private tour. I had lunch with several officers in their mess as part of this memorable visit.
Fang Posted October 16, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2007 I cruised on the Independence 13 years ago. I am sure that in her day, she was a fantastic ship, however, when I was sailed, to say she had seen better days, is a understatement. It was my first time and probably last, that I was on a ship with Steam power. No vibrations at all.
