homemade beaded lanyards

Has anyone ever made their own beaded lanyards? What kind of string do they use? I was thinking fishing line as it's pretty strong. Also, what do you do with the end that you tie? I'd hate for it to be noticeable.

 

We are also making flags for the balconies, t-shirts that everyone will wear the first day, and I am making trip diaries and music cd's as a gift for everyone. This will keep me busy till the cruise!

jewelry wire and jeweler's tools. I've been making/selling beaded jewelry for 3-4 years and I'm getting ready to make lanyards for my friend and I to use... I've never used fishing line, and altho it would be strong, I don't know how you would finish the ends....

Any bead shop will help you and show you the basics! The wire and tools will run around $25-30, and beads would run anywhere from $6-50, depending on what you use. The clip will run about $2-5. These are retail prices and estimates....

The bead store I go to recently began carrying a stretchable plastic wire, and I made a lanyard using this. For years I have used my old company lanyard (also stretchable, like 1/4" wide elastic), and I like the stretch feature as I don't have to bend over too far to insert my key card in my door. I just took the hook mechanism off my old lanyard and had them put it on the new one (the bead store did all this for free), and voila!...a new, improved, nicer looking lanyard.

I've been beading a few years now and used fishing line when I started. All you have to do is make a loop with the beads and bring the fishing line back through some previous beads. When you tie it off somewhere in the middle of the lanyard cut the line close to the bead and coat it with clear nail polish, then stick the knot inside the closest bead to hide it.

I saw a badge holder the other day that was called a "breakaway". The closure was a magnet. I'm sure you might find this at a craft store.

Just finished making 3 beaded lanyards for cruising. Never have done any beading before and this project was very easy ... and very cheap!

 

I used a lobster claw at the end to attach my card to ... seemed a little "dressier" than a lanyard clip. Also used fish line ... when I put the line thru the crimp beads, I just threaded the line back thru the last four or five beads to hold it tight. Looks very "finished".

 

I'm very tall, and this way I could make the lanyards to the length I needed ....

It's a long necklace that some companies use for ID cards...many cruisers use them to hold their sail and sign cards so that they don't have to carry a purse or fumble for their wallets. You can either punch a hole in your card and attach it to the hook on the lanyard, or use a clear plastic sleeve at the end of the lanyard and put your card in there.
