Smoking

Sunday. Oct. 28th 1:45 PM :Just spoke to Celebrity cruise specialist on the phone and was told that starting Jan. 2008 smoking will be banned on all of their ships in cabins and balconies. It will only be allowed in certain designated areas.

An official announcement has been made that that policy will go into effect on RCCL starting January 2008. Now, the customer service personnel are the same for both lines, so it is possible that the person you spoke to was quoting the RCCL policy rather than the Celebrity policy. Until I hear an official announcement, I will be skeptical, and if this is a make-or-break issue for you, you should be skeptical, too. I would hate for you to be disappointed if you show up on an X ship only to find that what you were told isn't true...

The contact numbers for RCCL are not the same as the phone numbers for Celebrity. I did call the Celebrity number and was VERY specific as to which ship and which cruiseline. I questioned the man twice as to if this was going to be on Celebrity and not just on RCCL. He was very specific that it would be on Celebrity. I know that this is just one persons word and until it has been published in print no one knows for sure. But since it will be affecting wether some people want to cruise or not to cruise with Celebrity I thought I would give a heads up as to what they told me.

This is great news and I hope it's true! We splurged on a balcony and I'd hate to have it ruined with a smoker next door. We'd like to leave our door open at nights but our family (especially our youngest daughter) is very sensitive to smoke.

Hi

I e mailed Captains Club following the last thread that stated this and this was thier response dated 10/10/2007.

Thank you for your e-mail. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your inquiry.

At this time, only Royal Caribbean International and Azamara Cruises prohibit smoking in the staterooms. There has not been an official statement for Celebrity Cruises whether we will follow with the same policy.

Thank you for choosing Celebrity Cruises.

I'm all about that!:D Actually, I also wrote to Captains Club and received the exact same response as Addict1 got from Ms. Whedon, also on Oct. 10th, word for word. But here it is Oct. 28, and a lot can change in 18 days...well, one can hope.:o

I really hope that this non-smoking update is true, my husband and I are considering a cruise next Jan and the line really appeals to us, but as I am allergic to smoke I am hesitant to book. I have heard some horrible things about how smoky Century is, can anyone else comment on this?

Hootsie, I know it is none of my business, but I ask you to please consider carefully whether it is a smart move to leave the door open when you have children sailing with you. I have no idea how old your kids are or what they are like, but the idea of a child going out on the balcony unsupervised and having an accident while you slept breaks my heart!

Have a SAFE and wonderful cruise!

Recently, cruise lines have been cracking down on onboard smoking. I'd credit two things for this trend: the fire on the Star Princess in 2006 and the increase in states and cities banning smoking in restaurants and bars. The latest line to jump on this bandwagon is MSC Cruises. Its new strict policy limits smoking to the Cigar Room, casino, one specific lounge, and a few designated cabins. Guests can smoke outside and on one side of the sun deck, but not in the majority of cabins or cabin balconies.

Want to know where smokers stand on the other cruise lines? Here's a quick summary.

Azamara: The two ships are completely smoke free with the exceptions of one section of the Looking Glass Lounge and one section of the pool deck.

Carnival: On Carnival, you can smoke in the casino, dance club, certain bars and lounges, and in specific sections of the outdoor decks. Smoking is also allowed in all cabins.

Celebrity: Cigarette smoking is permitted in staterooms and on the left side of most public areas.

Holland America: Holland America allows smoking in staterooms and in designated areas of most lounges.

Norwegian: Smokers can light up in their staterooms and balconies, in the casino and Cigar Bar, as well as in outside areas away from the sports deck, food venues, or kids' areas.

Oceania: Designated smoking areas can be found on Deck Nine, one corner of the pool deck, and in one section of Horizons.

Princess: Princess allows smoking in staterooms, on balconies, and in designated indoor and outdoor areas.

Regent Seven Seas: Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas, the casino, and a few lounges. Regent is in the process of banning smoking in all staterooms and balconies, and the policy will be enacted fleetwide by the beginning of February.

Royal Caribbean: In 2008, Royal Caribbean will restrict smoking to designated areas and the starboard side of outdoor decks. Guests can smoke on their balconies but not inside their staterooms.

Windstar: Smoking is only allowed outside, on the starboard side of the lounge, and in the casino on the Wind Surf.

 My apologies to all who I have upset with my two posts. I was just stating what I found out when calling Celebrity today. I felt that if what Celebrity told me was true it could affect peoples choices to cruise with Celebrity. I truly never meant to start trouble.

Thank you Hosts Walt & Anne for removing the post attacking me. Again I am sorry and I wish I never started this thread.
