sundeck Posted August 27, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2004 I buy the phone cards from Sams Club. found them to be the cheapest anywhere and you can recharge them on your credit card. Used it to make a call from a payphone in Cozumel and don't remember the details but I didn't use many minutes at all. Had to find special pay phones but had no trouble. There's a recording you can call ahead of time and get the access codes and exchange rate from the country you are in to call the US. My daughter called home collect from Mexico once and we only talked about 3 minutes - the bill was about $60!!!! forget that!
gambler Posted August 27, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted August 27, 2004 Found out in Freeport, when you get off the ship, right ahead on the right side is a call station for internet, faxing, calling. A call to the US was around 75 cents a minute and very easy to use. You give them a deposit in cash and settle up when you are done with your call. scubagirrl Posted August 27, 2004 #12 Share Posted August 27, 2004 Sam's club cards (as with most US Cards) will not work in Nassau. There are no free 800 lines, and the access numbers do not work. Your best bet is to purchase a Batelco calling card. They come in denominations of $5 - $20, and cost about $1 per minute to call. You can get them at most souvenier shops. As for cell phones, it's not only the service, but the phone model itself. Nassau has recently changed to GSM, but the US and European Sim cards don't work at all. Some older model analog phones work in roaming mode. Full digital phones mostly don't work. You billing from batelco catches up with you a few months down the line. Billing is about $.90 a minute but with some additional charges. My last bill was about $43 for a 1/2 dozen calls home.
