NCL-Rd trip to Hawaii from Los Angeles

It's possible they could occasionally. The NCLA's ships operating under the American flag can do this itinerary occasionally. But their main itinerary will always be round trip Hawaii cruises sailing from Honolulu, because of the conditions placed upon them when they got the exemption to sail under the American flag.

They have sailed one-way cruises from and to San Francisco in the past, and the Pride of Hawaii, soon to be the Jade, will sail a one-way cruise next month from Honolulu to Los Angeles.

While it is possible, I don't believe it is likely they will sail round trip Hawaii cruises from California soon.

Having answered your question first, it's time for me to step upon a soap box and give a plea for NCL to restore, refurbish, and return the SS United States back into service. This is one itinerary it can do better than any other cruise ship in the world. It's faster speed, it holds the record as the fastest ocean liner ever at 366 knots, is idea for this. It could sail to Hawaii from California in 3 days vs the 5 days required by cruise ships today, and therefore 4 days quicker on a round trip cruise. Existing 14 day itineraries could become shorter 10 day itineraries, or have 4 extra days in Hawaii on a 14 day cruise.

This can be done using the existing steam turbines propulsion plant aboard the SS United States, or by switching to modern gas turbines for propulsion, but keeping all four propellers. The horsepower required to reach 36 knots was less than 270,000 shp. That's less than 70,000 shp, or KW per propeller. Since one horsepower = 0.7456999 KW, the electric motive power required per propeller is 50 KW. 50 KW propulsion motors do exist in today's market. Of course, 200 KW in total devoted to propulsion is significantly more than the 40 KW used by Star/Jewel class ships, close to 5 times as much. But you could push all the other cruise lines out of the Hawaii market if you did.
