Lasarre Posted February 3, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2008 What is the best (most economical) way to call the US from the caribbean? My cell phone seems like it will be expensive. Thanks
kitty9 Posted February 3, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2008 The cheapest way is to purchase calling cards at each port and use the local phones.
Jarhead235 Posted February 3, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 3, 2008 Most caribbean ports have telephone centers or call centers where you can make calls back to the states and only pay for the minutes used. AND they are very eonomical.....cheaper than the caling cards, because you only pay for the minutes used. Just ask at the visitors center when you get off of the ship. Calling cards are good too, but only use them on the island where you buy them. They DO NOT work on other islands, regardless of what the vendor tells you. One to avoid - DO NOT use the phones that are located either at the dock or close by that look like pay phones, but only take credit cards. It will cost you anywhere from $5 to $8 PER MINUTE and you won't know it until you get the bill. Hope this helps! Joe
JerseyGem Posted February 4, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 4, 2008 Do you really need to talk or would texting be enough? Depending on your cell phone plan, texting might be cheaper than calling from a pay phone (and will certainly be cheaper than calling on the cell LOL). Our plan gives us a flat fifty cents charge for texting- any length message, from anywhere. Also, remember that two common Caribbean ports (St Thomas and Puerto Rico) are in the USA, so are included in your cell plan if you have nation-wide service. Just make sure you are docked (and the ship has turned off it's cell tower).
