Vancouver answers from a Vancouverite

I'll be happy to post a review of L'Hermitage post-stay. I'll root for the Canucks to stay alive until June as our Coyotes have disappointed again. Guess 'The Great One's' magic doesn't extend to the other side of the Boards.

I looked at the interactive map and found the right intersection- on another thread someone suggested Hon's as a good Dim-Sum experience. Any other close to the Hotel? the entire CC site has been a great help in planning our pre-cruise visit- thank all of you again.

I'm sure the Coyotes will play much better when they get home (Winnipeg)

The Phoenix Roadrunners, Portland Buckaroos, Seattle Totems, San Diego Gulls are some of the teams that I can remember but since this is a cruising site I will cruise on over to my bed and perhaps call it a night but after a great 30km bike ride tonight I am not tried.

It should be chaos for our final bike ride on Thursday - we start at the Plaza of Nations at 5:45PM and the Canucks game is at 6PM

Cheers

Dennis

At $30 plus dollars the HOHO's are expensive but they are are a good way to see the city in a hurry. They will take you to everything you want to see except Grouse Mtn. I have been to Granville Island at all times...

Thanks, Putterdude. I know we're trying to squeeze in a lot.

I thought, if the weather cooperates and we feel up to it, we might take the Trolley sunset tour to Grouse.

Putterdude -

What is the Fernie Flash up to these days - boy that was a LONG time ago. He played for the Roadrunners in the late 60's - early 70's. I left Phoenix in 71, and I think he still played for them then.

I was really sad to hear that the Roadrunners have informed the ECHL that they have ceased operation as a hockey club. I believe they were the first professional sports organization in Phoenix, beating out the Suns by a year or so.

Frank is or has been selling real estate in Fernie for quite a number of years now. Fernie is quite a hot spot for Alberta skiers and the real estate market has been very brisk. He comes a a large family who like DW's family were Fernie pioneers. Over the the years I got to know a number of his uncles and his dad who worked for a brewery and gave DW and I a couple of cases of beer as we past thru Fernie some 39 years ago. I last spoke with Frank some 6 or 7 years ago. But you could probably google him and find his website. Never had heard the handle the "Fernie Flash".:)

PD - It's a small world - what a coincidence that DW has roots in the Fernie area - my paternal roots are in the Elk Valley - what is now Sparwood - can trace it back to 1903 - in a piece of local history my grandmother was on the train that was chugging it westward when the Frank Slide hit - they managed to get the train stopped before it slammed into the rock slide.

A cousin I believe may still own the butcher shop in Fernie.

One of my uncles guiding operation is now the town of Elkford - he sold the land to the coal company - one of my cousins own/operates the A & W in the valley and another friend - now deceased - was the mayor of Sparwood for a few years.

I posted earlier about the Georgia Hotel - the project is going full blast - they are almost up to street level on the tower. Scott Construction seems to be the contractor.

One ship that will be coming into Vancouver for an overnight visit in June is "the World" - it will dock at Canada Place and stay overnight - I last saw it in New Orleans in Feb.

Rumor has it that you need at least $5 million for a suite on it.

That's the news for now.

Cheers

I have been looking for that thread re Metropolitan to make a correction as you are quite correct they are working on the Georgia Hotel Residences. I had contacted #1 son who is the downtown r/e broker today and he confirmed this as well. So they either found a new source of cash or I was confused, but I was sure that I saw the president of Delta Properties, who I know, on TV annoucing the shut down of the project.:o

In any even DW's grandfather was the lumberman in Fernie from the turn of previous century...in fact I have accused him of setting the fires that burnt the town twice. My FIL was a BC Policeman in Fernie and that is where he met my MIL. Her sister remained in Fernie until her death in the mid-70's and was the driving force behind the Fernie Historical Society. The grandfather provided the lumber for the Cape Cod style homes than you see as you enter Sparwood. I was for many years a partner in the Overwaitea Shopping Centre there and used to use it to extend my vactions in the Kootenays to kick the dirt and dare I say....play golf at the Fernie G & CC. There are better golf courses in the province but none with a better view.:D

PD - check with DW and see if she or you for that matter knows the Brown family that operates the Fernie Meat Market - if so Shirley is my cousin although I doubt if she would remember me - if you do and she wants to know tell her that I am her Uncle Tom's oldest.

It's the A&W in Sparwood that another cousin owns.

The world is due in Vancouver June 25, 26 - when will it be in Port Alberni and how long is the stay.

Is the HAL a regular stop or was it added because the cruise companies are deserting Mexico.

Cheers

I can't remember when The World was coming but it is probably when it leaves Vancouver. I just read in the paper it would be here again this summer.

It was only here for a day in 2004.

The Statendam has been scheduled to come in here since last summer, it has never been here before.

She remembers the butcher shop and can remember her DGM purchasing meat there but does not recall the family name. However DW never lived in Fernie, she spent a number of summers there as a youg girl but that was it.

Not a great hockey game but a nice win for the boys.:)

Thought I would celebrate my 3000th post - or at least it should be - on a home grown thread - only saw the last five minutes of the game as I was out biking in preparation for the Vancouver Marathon bike escort job on Sunday.

Was getting updates on my Blackberry and by the time I got to the bar - Chicago had just tied it and then a few minutes later the place exploded when Sami put the rebound away.

In a few years time people won't remember that the Canucks blew a 3 - 0 just that they won the game.

Seeing Dale Tallon's image on the big screen after the Canucks re-took the lead brought back memories of his career here in Vancouver.

PD or anyone - without googling do you remember who scored the Canucks first goal in franchise history and it wasn't Tallon.

Cheers

Barry Wilkins? Something like that having seen the clip on TV many times.

ScottBee - you are right - I think he wore the same # as Bobby Orr and I think it was scored against the LA Kings - will have to dig out the program from that first game to confirm the # and game.

We are so far off topic...well its hard to believe. But here is another bit of trivia to press between the pages of your memory...the first NHL Canuck game was played on the night before I got married and one of DW's aunts very kindly hosted a post rehersal dinner party...naturally the TV was on and all of the guys were standing around it watching the game. Barry Wilkins did score that first goal and his number was #4. Then on October 11th,which should have been a Sunday, the Canucks won their first game, beating the Leafs 5-3 and we were on our way to the "cups".

Actually PD - the thread title is "Vancouver answers from a Vancouverite" and the Canucks are part of the Vancouver scene so hopefully we are educating people about an important part of our local history.

Just like those who still think that Vancouver has never won a Stanley Cup?

Cheers

If you are docked at Canada Place, it is possible to walk to Stanley Park. There is a beautiful seawall that will take you there.

I had read on this thread about LimoJet Gold awhile back. I just contacted them about picking us up at our hotel (Hampton Inn) downtown and bringing us to the airport. According to their website it is $39 from the airport to downtown. I mistakenly assumed it would be $39 from downtown to the airport. Not so. They confirmed my reservation for $60. I wanted to let you all know about their "false" advertising or "price increase".
