Carnival announces increase in Fuel levy

Recommended Posts

Here is article from The Age April 19th

Increase is $2 pp per day

Fuel surcharges rise

Cruise passengers are being hit with higher fuel surcharges. Six lines owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp, the world's biggest cruise-ship operator, will increase a levy of $US7 a day on each of two people in a cabin to $US9 a day on bookings made in the US from tomorrow.

It's not yet known if or when the increase will be applied in Australia. The US charge will be capped at $US98 a person, up from $US70.

And there is more bad news.

A surcharge of $US2 a day will now be levied on third, fourth and fifth passengers in a cabin to a maximum of $US28. There was no surcharge previously for these passengers.

The increase, which Carnival says has been forced by continuing rises in fuel prices, affects the fares charged by Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Cunard Line and Seabourn Cruises.

The move comes soon after the news that Carnival Corp had agreed to refund about $US40 million in surcharges to customers who were charged the original amount after they had paid for their cruise.

P&O\Princess Australia have never announced plans of a fuel levy, let alone an increase of it. Fuel levies have applied to most US based cruises since late last year.

The fuel price increases in the US are a much larger issue than here. World price of fuel is set in $US. As their dollar devalues, the price of fuel goes up in $US. At the same time the $AU has been gaining value against the $US.

While our fuel prices are going up, it is only a fraction of what is happening in the USA.

As you can see they (Carnival) did announce it and it will add $1000 to our cost for upcoming cruise!

Given that in Oz we cant change or alter our cruise at all without losing our $3000 deposit this is most unfair!

  If it's capped at US$98 per person how does that equate to $1000?

I apologise in advance if I've missed something.

Carnival Australia or Carnival US?

Carnival in the US has had fuel subsidies for several months, and no announcement was made for Europe or Australia. I have not seen anything to suggest the announcement to increase US fuel subsidies has anything to do with Aussie cruises. If they decide to do it in Australia as well, there will be a further announcement, and it is likely to be in Aussie dollars too..

Carnival Australia has not made a public announcement on their site since 24th April.

US Carnival made this announcement on the 9th April, and as per Flipper's post from The Age, it is not known if\when this will be applied in Australia - this statement announces an increase to a levy that Carnival Australia does not charge at all at present for Sun & Dawn Princess, Pacific Dawn, Pacific Sun. There are no retrospective charges, and if the same applied here you would have been charged $5 or $7US per person per day when you booked.

Effective for all new bookings made on or after April 21, Carnival's fuel surcharge will increase from $5 to $7 per person per day, based on double occupancy. In addition, a fuel supplement of $2 per person per day will apply to third, fourth and fifth guests in a cabin. Total fuel charges are not to exceed $98 per person per voyage for the first two passengers and $28 per person per voyage for any other passengers sharing the cabin. The fee increase applies to six of the Carnival Corporation's cruise lines: Carnival, Holland America, Princess, Costa, Cunard and Seabourn.
