pjtraveler Posted May 12, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2008 Charlie--Looks like we're doing some of the same areas on our cruises. We leave Saturday to travel on the Danube with a pre-stay in Prague. (Thanks also for the info on China on the other older thread!) We'll be sure to post information about our Danube trip when we return with our ideas about Prague and sites along the Danube. Hambagahle Posted May 12, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2008 We stayed at the Riverside Hotel in Prague in October last year while waiting to board a Deilmann cruise...it is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels and really lovely. It is on the Mala Stran side of the river, across the bridge from the "Dancing" building and it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the Charles Bridge. Since Prague is a walking city par excellence, and you see wonderful things at every turn, this did not strike us as a problem and we wanted quiet away from the tourist hordes! The hotel has no restaurant but they booked us at the Kacnicky Modre (Golden Duck, I think) for one dinner and we loved it. Great Czech food and lovely service and atmosphere. It is in the Mala Stran, across from the Mandarin Oriental. We also ate at the Rekjavik restaurant in the old town. Very imaginative, tasty food! Make sure to have good walking shoes when you visit Prague...you will need them!

skandls Posted May 13, 2008 #9 Share Posted May 13, 2008 We took the train from Prague to Munich - it split off to Nuremburg. The CZ Republic train was very old. We bought Eurail first class tickets. I would not travel on the Czech trains in second class. Our car was very empty but the second class cars had people standing in the hallways. You could look into the toilet and see the tracks. There was no food or water for the first 3 hours of the trip. They finally stopped and people raced off the train to get a fast food hamburger. After the train took off a man came around with a dolly with drinks and snacks for sale. If you can try to take a German train. They are much much nicer. Prague is a great place to visit. We did several of the 'walking tours'. Show up and pay - very inexpensive. I don't drink beer but we did a beer tour and it was fun. We got to see places where real people hung out. And you get to meet other tourists from all over the world - out for an evening of pub hopping.

Charlie & Paulette "bofus" :) :) For a budget alternative, you can try the Tyn Hostel (http://www.hosteltyn.com/rooms-price-list/) which is just behind the Tyn Church on the Old Town Square. When my husband and I took our 2 teenage sons to Prague in 2005, we stayed there for a new experience (and also to save $$!). I checked out their website, and the beds currently go for about $26 USD pp. We had a 4-bed room to ourselves, and it was very clean; best of all, the location was not to be beat! The Hostel Tyn is very close to a great little place to eat and check your email, an internet cafe called the Bohemian Bagel. Tina
