Solutions to the Chair Hog Problem

Recommended Posts

Lokks like we at Cruise Critic need to find a solution to the chair hog problem. Here goes one idea: Have towels with a different color on each side. Every 2 hours, have attendants remind people to turn their towel to the right color for the next session. Give them about 15-30 minutes to do so. If they aren't changed after that time, the attendants can pick up the towels (and any loose articles) to free up the chair. Items could be picked up in a lost and found. What do you think? Any other ideas?

The best thing about coming home from a cruise, is getting to book another one!

Kathy,
Maybe if the so-called "Deck Patrol" did a better job of enforcing the rules there would not be such a huge problem. I am still not sure what they do.

I'm an early riser and enjoy my coffee near the pool. Last week on the Grandeur, I could not tell you how many times I saw someone drop 3-4 towels on chairs, then wander off to ?

Mike

I don't have a problem with people who drop off two or three towels and save those chairs as long as they are back within 20 minutes. We do this very early AM and then go get our breakfast in the Windjammer. There are always plenty of chairs available when we return less than 20 minutes later. We are usually the first ones outside. Hope I don't get flamed for this one.

It's those people that save 6 - 8 chairs and then don't come back for a couple of hours that get me. It is usally only the original savers and then others will drift in throughout the day. Some chairs will sit all day without a human occupant.

I would suggest that CC members just start getting touch and remove claim those seats that are being saved when nothing else is available.

Twenty minutes is reasonable, and not the major issue. Everyone should have the opportunity to use the restroom, grab a snack or beverage, etc. Like you say:

I agree!

We do the same as you Family of 14. We are usually around the pool by 9:00 a.m. By 11:30 we have had it for the day as we like to sun before it gets to strong. Then when we depart, a late riser has a chance a two chairs.

I just read somewhere (I think it was in the C & A) that the "deck patrol" is supposed to remove towels from chairs that have been unoccupied for 30 minutes...If they did their job better, there wouldn't be a problem...

Family of 14: If there are still plenty of chairs available after you return from your Windjammer breakfast, why not just grab the seats then? (I don't mean to flame you - just curious.)

I can't see any reason for grabbing them ahead of time unless you are angling for particularly "good" seats or something similar? Just wondering.

I concur Travelgrrl--It seems just to be a matter of degree. I can understand holding a chair while taking a quick break or going to get something quick to eat, but holding a chair before you are ready to use it is the same type of conduct that we all complain about, isn't it?
