Chick's pal Posted June 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2008 We previously lived in the San Francisco area, but have never cruised to/from there. We're very comfortable taking BART between airport and embarcadero, but wonder how cooperative cab drivers will be in giving us the short ride between the BART embarcadero station and the pier? Has anyone had trouble with taxi drivers not wanting to do this? Obviously the cost savings are significant, not to mention the difference in travel time. We'd be interested in traveling this route each way, and would appreciate any feedback from others who might have tried the same thing.
TwoTravelin Posted June 5, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2008 We did exactly this in March. The taxi driver had no issue and I believe it came in slightly under $10.
sultan_sfo Posted June 5, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 5, 2008 IF 2 persons, then BART Airport to Embarcadero: $12 Cab: $10 + Shuttle: $40 (with tip). Avoid cab from Airport to Pier -- that can run to $60 with tip. BART is faster than Shuttle. But if you have enough time, why not start your cruise in comfort instead of schlepping your luggage up the BART elevator / escalator. If you get a cab from the Hyatt Regency Ranks, cab driver will take you but not happily. And you will have to tip the Hotel guy. From Pier to BART, the cab driver will be definitely disgruntled. At the Pier there is a Cop at the cab line and the cab cannot refuse you. This is from personal experience. /Sultan
Chick's pal Posted June 5, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted June 5, 2008 OK, so we have one vote for "no problem" and one vote for "big problem." Any other experiences or opinions to help break this tie?
Coreopsis Posted June 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2008 No worries. Grab a taxi at the Hyatt, tip your guy there and away you go.
figmentdj Posted June 20, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Budget has a rental car drop at the Hyatt regency. We planned to drop the car off and grab a cab to the pier. So we just tip the Bell captain, he'll hail the cab and we're off? About how much will the trip cost? And why will the cabby not be so happy about this? Sea Hag Posted June 21, 2008 #7 Share Posted June 21, 2008 We live in the South Bay, so we always take CalTrain from the end of the line, near the stadium, over to the cruise pier and back. Short distance, but we've never had a problem with taxis. They've always seemed more than happy, and it's very easy to get a taxi. You may have a shorter distance to the Bart station, but I can't see that as a problem. The taxi driver can easily make it back to the pier and pick up another load of people. I was considering to "let" my 19 year old son walk to peir from there. Is that do-able? He won't have much in the way of luggage. Thanks!!
