Caribbean Currency - Help!!

This will be our first time in the Caribbean. Reading various guide books, they quote the East Caribbean Dollar as the currency on various islands. Just looking for some advice from seasoned Caribbean travellers -

Should we take some EC$ with us or can we use US$ in all our ports of call?

American greenbacks are the currency of choice. Don't leave home without a bunch :D

NMnita thanks - We had banked on using our plastic for any large purchases, but, as you say, street vendors etc will be more interested in cash. We have been in the US many times before but just wanted to make sure we had things right for the Caribbean.
