4 cruisers Posted April 8, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 8, 2004 Awful, isn't it???! We don't mind splurdging on a great bottle of wine for up to $50- but don't give us Woodbridge Chardonnay for $28.50!!! We're starting in Barcelona and I plan to do some research and bring some great Spanish wines on board...the corkage fee would be well worth it!!! ...until our August 28, 2004 Splendour of the Seas
FinelyCruising Posted April 8, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 8, 2004 Foe example: We paid $60 for the Mondavi Napa Chardonnay which included the gratuity. Very nice wine but when I board Voyager in July, since there is no air travel for me, I'll be bringing a valise of wines! The Mondavi I ordered on the ship I purchase for $18-20 locally. Holy Cow! Mark_K Posted April 8, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 8, 2004 4 cruisers, If you like wine at all get one of the wine & dine packages. It brings the price down from outrageous to about what you would pay in a restaurant at home. ---------------------------------------------------------- "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits" Mark Twain "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's formal night attire, poolside attire, child rearing practices, walk-talkie usage, chair hogging, seat saving, line cutting ..." MJL Posted April 8, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 8, 2004 Mark_K, We have used the wine package before and liked the value. Last week on the Grandeur, we were disappointed to find that they did not offer a wine or drink package. I can't speak for other ships, but we had to make a selection nightly from the complete wine list. In Planning Stages

cruzingduo Posted April 9, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 9, 2004 We are sailing on the Mariner in May. DH is really into wine. We have been told by RCI that we can only bring 2 bottles per cabin aboard the ship. Last year on our 15 day DAWN cruise there was no limit to the number of bottles, however we had 2 rules. We couldn't bring anything that they served onboard (which was no problem for us) and we had to pre-pay the corkage fee prior to boarding. We took an email with us onboard to indicate the dining rooms should open our wine at no charge. We tried to get info from RCI about the wine & dine package. I've been calling and emailing them for 3 months. Thay tell me there is no such package available at this time on the Mariner. Not sure about any of their other ships. Good luck bringing your wine on. I'd be interested to hear if you are able to take more than 2 bottles.
sunlovey Posted April 9, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted April 9, 2004 Based upon the wine list... we will be bringing out own bottles, several in fact, i'll find a way. And its not even so much about price but about true variety and unique offerings. Our NCL cruise offered some really great wines at amazingly reasonable prices; not so here. But... no worries, like i said, we'll just bring what we like— corkage is $12 right?
aqusis Posted April 9, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 9, 2004 Yes it's 12$ and it's appears to be hit or miss as to whether you actually get charged. Some folks do, some folks pay once for several bottles, the only time we took a bottle to dinner, we weren't charged at all. I think the RCI web site says it $12 but policies may differ from ship to ship. Mariner of the Seas
yarlenna Posted April 9, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 9, 2004 Before we boarded Brilliance on March 8th, we were told that the wine and dine package had been discontinued. We were very pleased that we were able to purchase the wine and dine package. If we had not been able to make that purchase, we just would have purchased much less wine. I don't know the status of wine and dine fleet wide. Things seem to be changing rapidly at RCI. I just hope that when they decide to upgrade the quality and value of their product that the changes happen as fast. Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise! sunlovey Posted April 9, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted April 9, 2004 I just can't get over how little Italian wine they offer. I guess that is my hang up, and why I wondered if you could call ahead and request they get a case of something special for you. Perhaps I should do just that, call and ask? tinsel57 Posted April 9, 2004 #17 Share Posted April 9, 2004 I would assume if enough people complained perhaps they might look at making some upgrades. sunlovey Posted April 9, 2004 Author #18 Share Posted April 9, 2004 Tincel57- my thoughts exactly! gosh, I think I'll email RCCL with NCL's wine list pdf and ask how they can justify selling @*#&$ for that kind of money when one of their competitors sells super tuscans for under $100 and high-end bordeauxs for over $100 cheaper than you'd buy them in a store (the Haut Brion)

sunlovey Posted April 9, 2004 Author #24 Share Posted April 9, 2004 tinsel57- i believe it totally fair to ask royal caribbean why they aren't more competitive with the wine selection and prices they offer based upon a comparison with NCL's wine list. so if you're willing, please do just that, as I have. here is the link to the NCL wine list in pdf format: http://www.ncl.com/more/wine_list.htm and here is the link to Royal's wine list: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/gifts/WineList.do;jsessionid=0000BRy9sOQpFQ11H-4iVQlbjdb:v2krl5v8
chriscruise Posted April 9, 2004 #25 Share Posted April 9, 2004 My husband and I each carried on two bottles of wine onto Radiance on March 28. We were charged the corkage fee after the head waiter came and inspected our unusual bottle of wine. We didn't mind because we would rather have our good wine than the wine offered on the list. When we ordered from the wine list we kept ordering the same wine each time. If you are discreet they will not stop you from bringing on your wine.
