Question: Please help

Hi Everyone,

We are a group of 42 looking at booking the Orchestra for April 18, 2009.

BUT, I cannot book this cruise for all of us until I get this question answered.

Is it true that no T-Shirts, Shorts or Bare feet are allowed after 6:00pm?

If this is the case, then this cruise line is not for us.

We are not a bunch of slobs that dress in cutoffs and wife beater shirts, but after dinner I want to be comfortable and not have to stay in my dinner clothes for the rest of the evening.

If someone could answer this, (The TA still has not gotten back to us) I would greatly appreciated it.

(P.S. I dress in Professional clothes all week and this is vacation not business)

Thanks for anyone that can help me.

Monica

From the website:

Q:What is appropriate to wear on board?A:Casual resort wear is appropriate at any time.

After 6:00pm, jeans, t-shirts, shorts, and bare feet are not permitted in the ships' public areas.

A cocktail dress for women and a suit or coat and tie for men are appropriate on formal evenings (one on 4- to 6-night cruises, two on 7- to 11-night cruises, and four on cruises 15 nights or longer).

It is not saying you have to wear formal weat after 6....

I have sailed with MSC many times and whilst they may not strictly enforce the rules, I can't recall seeing people very often that casually dressed at dinner (on any night) nor in the bars. If they do "let you away with" ignoring the dress code, you will be in the minority. Its' one of the reasons that I like MSC because casual is not my thing in the evenings. personally I would ot go on a cruiseline that was more casual as that is not what I prefer. Their is the risk that other passengers may be offended, depending on how casually you dress, especially on formal evenings. My view is that there are so many cruise companies out there, catering for different tastes and preferences, why deliberately choose one that doen't suit you?

Im sorry that some of you mis-read my question. We would NEVER dress down in the Dining Room ( Shorts/T-Shirts/Barefoot) We are seasoned cruisers and know better than that, But that was not the question.

The question was: as it is stated on there web site that

After 6:00pm, jeans, t-shirts, shorts, and bare feet are not permitted in the ships' public areas.

I had asked if they stick to this rule AFTER Dinner, like going to the casino, clubs etc...

After Dinner we go back and change into (Comfy) clothes for the night.

Sorry if I had wrote the question wrong. And the confusion to all of you :)

Also,Im still waiting for my TA to call back with the answer..If and when I get a call back I will let you all know too

This is a fair question. I am trying to learn more about this cruiseline and hadn't even thought about the dress code in public areas in the evening. I too prefer to switch to somewhat casual attire after dinner, so I'd be interested in knowing what the expectations are. I hope you'll let us know what your TA reply is

MY TA indicated they expect many of these rules to change for the Carribean destinations and the influx of an Americans on board. It is my understanding they already have changed to allow free room service and pizza, which is not on their Europen cruises.

BAre feet are not allowed inside the ship- ou never know what your going to step in- broken glass, alcohol, vomit etc. Sounds gross but its true. My suggestion would be to stick with Carnival which sounds like the type of cruise line you are looking for. Your would not walk around barefoot or in cutoffs in the lobby of a hotel would you? There are dress codes for a reason and nothing more discusting then looking at a mans hairy arm pit while having a wonderful dinner!

We are always to full after dinner to stay in our fancy clothes for too long. I would expect that capris, etc would be okay for after dinner (at least they better be). I often wore dressy capris and a nice shirt to dinner on nights that weren't formal night.

This will be my fifth cruise line to try. It's funny but Carnival was usually the most dressed up. I have never had a bad cruise, just things I like differently on each one. NCL was the most laid back in dress. On the second formal night we decided to forgo our fancy clothes because not many others were getting dressed up. It didn't help that it was a port day.

Capris are absolutely fine after dinner or even to dinner (on nights other than formal). Polo shirts, cargo pants are also fine too. On casual nights and in public areas you'll see a variety of attire with some choosing to dress more formally and other less so. The dress is definitely overall less formal when in the caribbean than in Europe. It's perfectly ok to wear casual, comfortable clothes. they just dont want you to be wearing the type of clothes that you would wear on the beach or sunbathing around the pool during the day.

Dear Monica!

During our vere very disapointing cruise we saw even jeans and sportshoes during Gala dinner in MSC Musica. So there is no control of dresscode in MSC.

There almost no control in anything. People are talking louldly in the hallways untill 3am - do not try to sleep before that.

I never saw a stuff member having dinner or lunch with customers, so they do not have any idea how pure food is. Or maybe they know,,,,

I recommend also you to consider some other cruise line.

I am going on the April 2009 cruise on the MSC Orchestra. I have read the above comments and have very little worry about the cruise. There is a very large group of us going that are friends. I feel as though with friends on the cruise, you can't have a bad time. As far as the staff not eating with the cruisers...you don't want them too. They are not supposed to do that, as it would be very tacky for them to do so. I have spoken with many employees from the MSC Cruise Line and my experience has always been wonderful. They have always been accomodating and extremely friendly at all times. They go out of their way to help in any way they can and have always given great advice. As far as the clothing, they told me personally that you can wear casual clothing anywhere but the dining room. Also, the shows they offer are not your typical broadway style shows, but more of a Cirque De Soleil style show. The "Orchestra" has a large movie screen at the top for a "movie under the stars" if you will. Also I was told by the company that their children's area offers Cocoa Cola parties / Chocolate parties / formal dinner for kids only / and has before had a High School Musical party during the times the children have been allowed to be in the kids area. I am looking forward to all that they have to offer and am expecting it to be different from the other American cruise lines and that's ok with me. I will be bringing my own drinks in my suitcase so that there will not be an issue with drinks throughout my stay. My opinion is to be prepared. Don't expect the "very best and nothing less", but be open minded. Have a great time with your family and show your children a great time. They don't need to see you complain about the food or lack there of. Be thankful and enjoy each other. ;)

What a fantastically positive attitude to have Rustypeanut. You and your family and friends are sure to have fun. I've not yet been on the Orchestra but go on my 8th MSC cruise in less than 2 weeks time (cant wait). I've always had a great time. yes there have been the occasional thing that wasn't quite right but never enough to outweigh all the good and great things. I've often come accross passengers who hated the same cruise that I and others were enjoying. I sometimes wondered if we were on the same ship. I've come to the conclusion that people have differing tatses and what one person loves another hates. For example some hate the announcements and other communications being in 5 or 6 languages. I love it, it makes me feel more like I'm overseas to be surrounded by passengers of all nationalities. Some dislike MSC because it's not what they expected based on their experience of other cruise lines. Nothing wrong with that. if you have a formula you like then stick to it. if you dont mind trying different things, then go for it.

Have a great time, when you finally get there. I wish I was going to be on the same cruise as you and your groip as it sounds like it's going to be fun all the way

We are going in March on the Orchestra. I can't wait no matter the reviews. Other cruises that I have been on, people wrote reviews about how horrible it was. We thought they all were great cruises. To each his own.

I agree. If somone does all the cooking and makes my bed everyday and I can sit by the pool in the sun with a drink in my hand how can that be bad. I worked for Hilton and we never "mixed" with the guests. The crew has their own area to eat, sleep and play. I have 2 teenage boys that I have to feed all day long they never stop so this is going to be great for me.... As for after dinner clothing. I don't know why anyone would wear a bathing suit the pools are closed but you can go to clubs and see shows so wear what you would at home to go out. If your comfortable in less then I say go for it.:D

Binklebum my second cruise was a TA on the MSC Opera at new year, from Genoa to Fort Lauderdale and was still my all time favourite. it is just so lovely and peaceful crossing the Atlantic with the days getting warmer and sunnier every day...and then to arrive in the caribbean , that was quite magical. the only bit i hated was the overnight flight home 9not that i was really ready to retunr to january temperatures in Scotland!)

Transatlantics really are the besti di another one the otherway around this April and have persuaded my cousin to try her first cruise with me next year from Brazil to Dover

You are going to have such a wonderful time and just think almost 3 weeks of no housework, no cooking, someone to wait on you hand and foot...what could be better?

We are going on the April 11, 2009 MSC Orchestra. Heading form New York to Florida to get there. You have the right attitude...I think if you go on a cruise to look for problems you WILL find them.

As for all those questions, I do think that the dress code my be a little looser when in America, but I have cruised before staying "properly" dress after 6 shouldn't be an issue....We have cruised with 4 kids and they, as well as us, were comfy in kahkis, capris, summery skirts etc, comfortable but not too bare or informal..We like to be dressed to be comfortable but not too comfortable. Do you need to wear flip flop and shorts in the evenings? I do not think so...so we will see.

I did see a family asked to leave the dinningroom on the Explorer this past August, for coming to formal night in flip flops, tanks and short shorts. They came back later dressed much nicer. They had a few problems on the ship in other areas, rude and Very Very loud. Maybe the communication was lacking....

All I can say is I am going to bring enough clothing for what ever may arise...I hope.

HINT: My younger son is in Catholic School and his Grey trousers and uniform Blazer looked great in the diningroom.. saved me from buying him a suit he will never wear again.

So everyone just enjoy the cruise...IT will be great!

Kathy and family
