AkSusan Posted August 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2008 How long does it take to get from Whittier to Anchorage airport and what is the earlyist time I should book a flight?Richard Once you get through the tunnel (in on the half hour, out on the whole hour) you're looking at about 1 1/2 hours. Also, during the summer and all the tourists it's advisable to make sure you're there at least 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours before your flight. Budget Queen Posted August 8, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Anchorage airport is also extremely cogested, it is best for a 2 hour window here. So consider a noon or later flight. IF you get an independent transfer, 11am would be my earliest.
gambit57 Posted August 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2008 10:30 is prolly doable, but I wouldn't recommend it. I'd say 11 at the earliest also. Here's what happened to us, as an example of things that can ruin your timing: Boat hit the dock on time. However, for some unexplained reason, disembarkation started about half an hour late or so. So even if you barely had any luggage and walked off, you still had a delay. We were supposed to get off pretty early, but after 1 group or so, the delay had hit about 1 and a half hours. Then, by the time we got to baggage, there was more delays there. And of course, our private driver was a few minutes late too. We weren't that annoyed cuz we weren't trying to make an early flight so we used the time to use the restroom, but after all those earlier delays, I'd have been panicked if we were trying to make a 10:30 flight. We were one of the first vehicles out so we beat the mad rush (saw a huge line of buses and vans coming in), but we still hit the airport at around 10 am. It wasn't crowded that early, but getting to the airport half an hour before your flight would have been pretty risky.
AkSusan Posted August 8, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 8, 2008 Got to remember too that now a lot of the airlines have rules that say you don't have your bags checked 40 minutes before, your bags or you aren't going. If you wouldn't have luggage alot of them say, if you're not checked in 30 minutes before you're flight, you're not going either. kenish Posted August 9, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 9, 2008 We flew out of ANC on a recent Thursday at 9:30am. In other words, a very unbusy time. From rental car return to checkin to the gate was a breeze *except* for the security line. It took about 30 minutes; a similar line at any other airport would have been 10 minutes max. Maybe the delay was unusual but the point is you never can know....
