What happens when people cancel?

I am sure that on practically any sailing, people cancel because they cannot go for whatever reason. What happens to that cabin? Does HAL try to sell it off again (therefore essentially making double for that room), or does the cabin stay empty for the cruise?

 

Also, has anyone ever been on a waitlist for a cruise and was able to get on at the last minute? Does HAL offer this option?

About the only cabins that are unoccupied when a ship leaves port are those of the "no-shows" on embarkation day. Those are not re-sold in case the pax can catch up to the ship - but I have heard cases of them being used by guest entertainers, etc.

 

We have been on a "short notice" list for HAL sailings from FL ports for about a year now, but haven't had any last-minute calls yet! :)

I was a late cancellation once. I canceled on Monday afternoon for a cruise leaving Wednesday. Since the sailing was from Rome I'm sure HAL wasn't able to rebook the cabin.

If it wasn't used for entertainers (usually they get better cabins than I book ;) ) it could have been used for someone who "just had to get away" from a single share, or if a cabin was flooded out.

We had to cancel about a week before we were to leave for a cruise -- someone was moved into our Delux suite -- I remember someone here mentioning about people sitting at their table and talking about getting notification that the people had gotten a call from their TA that they were moved to the a suite.

On a repositioning cruise several years ago the Delux suite next to ours was empty when we left Seattle. We had emergency med vac within a couple of days and the med vac man had to be left behind -- winds were too high to safely get him up to the helicopter -- they had a hard time getting the patient off the ship. So he stayed in that cabin until we got to San Francisco. After that the purser moved into that cabin as he was to leave when we got to Ft Lauderdale and the new purser came on in LA.

This is hardly unique to HAL.

 

Hotels charge a guest for a pepaid room or a late cancellation and attempt to resell the cancelled room.

 

All prepaid escorted tours attempt to resell a cancelled booking.

 

All cruise lines attempt to resell a cancelled cabin.

Well they do offer them to TA's, that is how I took my cruise last month from Seattle. The cabin was cancelled Thursday morning and offered to me in the afternoon, and we sailed on Friday. The cabin steward had the manifest from the day before with the other people's name. Also all thier gifts and shore tour tickets where in the cabin. (And yes we returned all the stuff)...

That's interesting that HAL was not able to update their records in time!
